KAI Operates 113 Solar Power Units Across 92 Railway Assets
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) continues to develop the use of renewable energy through the installation of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) across various company operational assets. To date, KAI has operated 113 PLTS units spread across 92 asset locations, with a total installed capacity reaching 4,430.65 kWp, or approximately 4.43 MWp.
With this capacity, KAI’s solar power plants have the potential to generate between 5.8 million and 6.6 million kWh of electrical energy per year, based on estimated solar production in Indonesia. The utilisation of solar energy supports energy efficiency across KAI’s various operational facilities and serves as part of an effort to achieve more optimal energy management within the railway ecosystem.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that the use of PLTS is one of the company’s steps in developing energy innovation to support rail-based transport operations.
“Railways require reliable infrastructure support so that public travel and goods distribution can run optimally. Energy management is a crucial aspect of railway operations, therefore KAI continues to seek opportunities to utilise technologies that can increase energy efficiency across company assets,” said Anne.
The development of KAI’s solar power plants has been carried out gradually since 2022. In the initial implementation phase, the installed capacity reached 206 kWp. This capacity increased to 1,314.30 kWp in 2023, then grew to 1,914.20 kWp in 2024, and reached 996.15 kWp in 2025. KAI is also preparing an additional capacity expansion of 500 kWp for 2026.
Solar power implementation is carried out across various assets that support train operations, ranging from stations, workshops (balai yasa), offices, and depots to other supporting facilities. Out of the 92 asset locations, PLTS implementation covers 62 station locations with a capacity of 1,759.90 kWp, 10 workshop locations with a capacity of 1,786.50 kWp, as well as other facilities such as offices, residential buildings (griya karya), depots, and record centres.
Anne explained that energy requirements in the transport sector are characterised by high demand and continuous usage. Therefore, energy management is a vital part of maintaining operational effectiveness while supporting the management of railway assets.
“Transport transformation encompasses railway travel along with all its supporting facilities. Through the use of renewable energy, KAI continues to optimise asset management to become increasingly adaptive to technological developments and operational needs,” said Anne.
The use of PLTS is intended to support electricity needs across various company facilities, including customer service areas, operational buildings, rolling stock maintenance facilities, and other supporting infrastructure. Solar energy serves as an alternative energy source to meet the electricity needs of assets with high solar potential.
According to KAI’s 2025 Sustainability Report, the use of electricity from solar panels is one of the key indicators of the company’s energy performance. In the report, KAI noted the use of solar panel electricity as part of the company’s energy management, expanding PLTS utilisation across more than 90 operational assets with a capacity of approximately 4.4 MWp.
The use of solar energy also supports KAI’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its operational activities. The development of PLTS is part of various energy efficiency and emission reduction initiatives undertaken by the company to support low-carbon transportation.
As a rail-based public transport company, KAI continues to develop innovations that support increased operational efficiency. The utilisation of PLTS on railway assets demonstrates how renewable energy technology can be applied to transport infrastructure to provide an operational system that is increasingly responsive to future needs.
“KAI will continue to evaluate various opportunities for innovation in energy and asset management. Through the use of technology, KAI is committed to providing transport services that are increasingly efficient, reliable, and sustainable for the public,” Anne concluded.
