KAI Opens 2026 Railway Sports and Arts Week in Yogyakarta, Uniting 1,632 Participants in Spirit of Service and Sustainability

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) officially opened the 2026 Railway Sports and Arts Week (Porseni Kereta Api 2026) in Yogyakarta on Tuesday (14/7). Carrying the theme ‘Spirit Competition, Power of Sustainability’, the event is being attended by 1,632 participants from 17 contingents within the KAI Group. The participants hail from various operational areas, regional divisions, work units, and subsidiaries of KAI. They arrive with diverse regional backgrounds, fields of work, and characteristics, then meet in a shared spirit to strengthen togetherness and service to the public. The 2026 Railway Sports and Arts Week features nine sports: basketball, futsal, football, volleyball, table tennis, tennis, badminton, chess, and Mobile Legends e-sport. In the arts field, participants compete in band and traditional dance categories. KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated that Porseni provides a space for workers to channel their abilities while building positive energy through healthy competition. The values of discipline, cooperation, creativity, sportsmanship, and mutual respect present during the matches align with the working character of railway personnel. ‘Each region and work unit has different characteristics and challenges. However, all KAI Group personnel are united by the same responsibility, which is to maintain safety and provide the best service to the public. Porseni is a space to nurture that togetherness through sports and arts,’ Bobby said. The KAI Group is currently supported by approximately 36,053 workers. This figure includes around 29,585 workers from the parent company and personnel seconded to subsidiaries, as well as workers in all KAI subsidiaries. They carry out various tasks, ranging from travel operations, customer service, maintenance of facilities and infrastructure, information technology, logistics, to corporate support functions. These different fields of work complement each other in maintaining the smooth operation of railway services across Java and Sumatra. The contribution of these workers is reflected in the KAI Group’s performance throughout the first half of 2026. During the January–June 2026 period, the KAI Group served 258,993,359 customers, an increase of 7.55 per cent compared to the 240,805,920 customers in the first half of 2025. In the same period, KAI transported 32.50 million tonnes of goods to support the distribution of energy commodities, industrial products, and national logistics. This achievement was supported by improved safety, strengthened service capacity, digitalisation, facility maintenance, and the development of intermodal connectivity. ‘Behind the journeys of hundreds of millions of customers and the distribution of millions of tonnes of goods are workers with different roles. They work at stations, on trains, in control centres, at railway workshops, in depots, on the tracks, and in various support units. All these roles are interconnected in one service system,’ Bobby said. According to Bobby, Porseni is a momentum to appreciate the dedication of workers while maintaining their physical and mental health. Interaction between contingents also opens space to get to know each other, exchange experiences, and strengthen collaboration across regions and work units. This year’s event offers a more diverse selection of competitions compared to the railway sports and arts activities in 2023. Chess was added as a new sport, while the arts field was expanded through band and traditional dance competitions. This diversity of categories provides broader opportunities for workers with different interests and abilities to participate. Every match is conducted upholding rules, respect, and a spirit of brotherhood between contingents. ‘In sports and arts, everyone can bring their own strengths. When all these abilities meet in a spirit of togetherness, energy is created that strengthens the KAI Group as one big family,’ Bobby said. In line with the event’s theme, the spirit of sustainability is applied through habits practised during the Porseni series. Participants are encouraged to bring tumblers and use reusable eating utensils to help reduce single-use waste. Each worker also collects one unused white R6 uniform. These uniforms will be reprocessed into products with utility value as part of implementing a circular economy and reducing textile waste within the company. The series of environmental care activities began with the planting of 25 productive trees at the Yogyakarta Railway Workshop on Monday (13/7). The trees, with an average height of 2.5 to 3 metres, consist of 10 mango trees, 2 mundu trees, 5 duku trees, 5 jackfruit trees, and 3 velvet sapodilla trees. Cumulatively, KAI has planted 99,785 trees from 2022 up to 13 July 2026. A total of 4,540 of these trees were planted throughout 2026 in various KAI work areas, considering the suitability of plant types and local environmental conditions. This programme complements various environmental initiatives that KAI has implemented in operational activities and customer service. KAI has operated 113 solar power plant units at 92 locations with an installed capacity of 4,430.65 kilowatt peak and a potential emission reduction of more than 5,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Since 1 July 2026, KAI has also begun gradually implementing B50 biodiesel fuel, paying attention to fuel quality, fleet readiness, safety, and operational reliability. Service digitalisation has also helped reduce resource use. Throughout the first half of 2026, the Face Recognition Boarding Gate was used by 5,555,034 long-distance train customers, reducing the need for approximately 13,888 rolls of boarding pass paper.
