KAI North Sumatra Records Decrease in Railway Security and Order Disturbances in 2026
Medan (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Regional Division I North Sumatra recorded 16 cases of security and order (kamtib) disturbances against the railway system between January and September 2t026, representing a 75 per cent decrease compared to the 63 cases recorded during the same period in 2025.
Anwar Yuli Prastyo, Manager of Public Relations for KAI Divre I North Sumatra, stated in Medan on Monday that the reduction in disturbances during 2026 is inseparable from the increasing public awareness regarding the importance of train travel safety.
“KAI Divre I North Sumatra continues to strengthen patrols, monitor high-risk areas, add surveillance cameras, coordinate with authorities, and provide safety education to the community to ensure that security and order along the railway tracks are better guaranteed,” he said.
Of the total 16 security disturbances throughout 2026, 10 cases involved stone-throwing at trains, three cases involved attempts to endanger train journeys, two cases involved the theft of assets, and one case involved the theft of passenger belongings.
All cases were successfully uncovered and addressed by KAI in collaboration with the relevant authorities.
Anwar emphasised that although the number of disturbances has decreased, active public awareness and participation remain the primary keys to maintaining the smooth and safe operation of train travel.
He reminded the public that signalling equipment and all facilities along the tracks are vital national assets protected by law. Damage to or the loss of signalling components has the potential to disrupt operational systems and endanger journeys.
“Vandalism against rails, signalling cables, signs, markings, and communication facilities can directly impact the safety of train travel and the hundreds of passengers on board,” he said.
Regarding the ongoing cases of stone-throwing at passing trains, KAI has called upon parents and residents living near railway lines to supervise children to prevent dangerous activities, such as playing near tracks or throwing objects at passing trains.
“The safety of train travel requires care and support from all levels of society. Maintaining the reliability and security of the railway tracks not only protects company assets but also represents a tangible contribution to the safety of railway passengers,” he concluded.
