KAI Launches KA Brumbung Cargo Train for Demak-Jakarta Logistics
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, has launched the KA Brumbung Cargo container train on Thursday, 16 April 2026. KAI’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that the freight train consists of 20 flat wagons, equivalent to 40 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). The train has a carrying capacity of up to 800 tonnes per trip and serves multi-commodity shipments with a frequency of once every two days. “This operational scheme provides room for businesses to adjust their distribution needs more measurably,” said Anne in a written statement on Monday, 20 April 2026. The train serves the transportation of goods from Brumbung Station in Demak Regency to Pasoso Station in Jakarta. The introduction of KA Brumbung Cargo adds to the logistics transport capacity on Java Island. The service is designed to provide businesses with more efficient and scheduled distribution options. Anne explained that Brumbung Station serves as a strategic departure point to meet demand in the Central Java region, particularly in Daerah Operasi 4 Semarang. The route used connects production areas with distribution centres in Jakarta, thereby strengthening inter-regional logistics connectivity. According to KAI data, the performance of freight transport in Daerah Operasi 4 Semarang during the first quarter of 2026 recorded 58,770 tonnes of container transport, an increase of 16 per cent compared to 50,459 tonnes in 2025. Transport of packaged goods (BHP) also reached 693 tonnes, up 31 per cent, while other transport amounted to 11,020 tonnes, growing 122 per cent. “Meanwhile, parcel transport was recorded at 1,137 tonnes, adjusting to the dynamics of distribution needs,” Anne said. Anne conveyed that the development of rail-based freight transport also impacts the overall efficiency of the transportation system. Shifting distribution to trains reduces road density and maintains optimal infrastructure conditions. “Logistics journeys that shift to trains provide broader benefits, from cost efficiency to smoother distribution across various regions,” she stated.
