KAI Jakarta Targets Closure of 40 Illegal Crossings by 2026

Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daerah Operasi 1 Jakarta targets the closure of 40 illegal crossings by 2026 to improve railway travel safety. “We have been tasked with resolving around 40 illegal crossings, where the width is less than two metres and there is no guard. We will close them for the safety of railway operations,” said Deputy 2 of Daop 1 Jakarta PT KAI, Deddy Hendrady, to reporters in Jakarta on Thursday. He mentioned that there are five self-managed crossings in the area between Cawang and Tebet that have been coordinated for closure with local authorities. However, for this year, PT KAI has only implemented the closure at one point in the Tebet-Cawang area, as the execution is still awaiting support from the regional government. “This year, only one. Although KAI’s programme has five, we don’t know yet if we will get help from the regional government to close them all or not,” he said. All illegal crossings essentially pose the same level of danger. Limitations in land and costs are obstacles in building official crossings. “Land limitations are also due to costs, as they are substantial to create, because we need the equipment, the posts, and then recruit personnel for guarding,” said Deddy. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daerah Operasi 1 Jakarta is now closing an at-grade illegal crossing on the route between Tebet Station and Cawang Station to improve railway travel safety and for the surrounding community. The relocation of the crossing closure location is a decision resulting from deliberations with residents. The consideration for relocating the location was made at the request of the community because the crossing in RT 05 is used more by residents compared to other locations.
