KAI Jakarta Records 19 Cases of Train Stone-Throwing Until June 2026

Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persata) Daop 1 Jakarta has recorded 19 cases of stone-throwing at trains from January to 3 June 2026, eight of which have been resolved.

“Based on field handling results, most perpetrators are under the age of 17. All apprehended individuals have been handed over to the police to be processed in accordance with applicable legal provisions,” said the Manager of Public Relations for KAI Daop 1 Jakarta, Franoto Wibowo, in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Franoto warned that throwing stones at trains is not merely a prank or teenage delinquency, but a dangerous act that threatens the safety of passengers, staff, and the public.

“When a train travels at high speed, a thrown stone can shatter glass, injure the faces and eyes of passengers, hit the driver operating the train, and even potentially cause accidents that endanger many people,” he explained.

Consequently, he noted, stone-throwing at trains carries serious legal consequences, including criminal sanctions. Under Article 323, paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code (KUHP) Number 1 of 2024, any person who causes danger to public railway traffic can be imprisoned for up to seven years.

If the act results in serious injury, the threat of punishment increases to a maximum of nine years, and if it causes death, the perpetrator can face up to 12 years in prison. Violations of these provisions may also incur imprisonment of up to three years as regulated under Article 197.

Franoto emphasised that young age does not erase legal consequences or the resulting social impact. According to him, children performing these acts might consider them mere jokes; however, once caught, they must face legal processes, police investigations, and the risk of disrupted futures.

KAI Daop 1 Jakarta continues to undertake various efforts to build awareness that railway travel safety is a shared responsibility. These efforts include safety socialisations in schools, residential areas near tracks, and coordination with local authorities, community leaders, and railway enthusiast communities.

KAI Daop 1 Jakarta also invites the public to be brave in reminding and reprimanding those seen playing near railway tracks or engaging in actions that could potentially endanger train journeys. The public is also urged to refrain from playing, conducting activities, or performing any actions near railway tracks that could jeopardise travel safety.

Franoto subsequently called upon the entire community, particularly parents and educators, to increase supervision and education for children ahead of the school holiday period to prevent stone-throwing incidents.

“Teachers and schools are also expected to incorporate safety messages for students before they enter the holiday period,” he added.
