KAI: Jabodetabek Commuter Line served 178 million trips from January to June
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded that the Jabodetabek Commuter Line served 178,001,308 trips between January and June 2026, reflecting the high demand for mobility and economic activity within the metropolitan region.
Anne Purba, Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, confirmed in Jakarta on Saturday that travel patterns during the first semester of 202<0xC2>6 showed a high demand for services on weekdays. The average volume of Commuter Line users from Monday to Friday reached approximately 1.05 million trips per day, which is 29.3 per cent higher than the weekend average of around 813,600 trips per day.
Purba noted that these figures demonstrate how closely urban rail services are linked to the lives of the community and the economic activities of the metropolitan area. She emphasised that the high volume of weekday travel underscores the strategic position of the Commuter Line in maintaining productivity in the Jabodetabek region, as smooth services are closely related to worker punctuality, business continuity, and economic circulation.
Of the total trips during the first semester of 2026, approximately 135.7 million, or 76.2 per cent, occurred on weekdays. Peak congestion was observed during the morning and evening periods as commuters travelled to work and returned home.
Purba stated that this growth necessitates a gradual strengthening of capacity through the addition of rolling stock, increased capacity for tracks and stations, improvements to signalling and electrical systems, and the optimisation of operational patterns.
Data shows a consistent recovery in passenger volumes over the last five years. The number of users was recorded at 168 million trips in 2021, increasing to 252 million in 2022, 331 million in 2023, 328.2 million in 2024, and 349.3 million in 2025. Entering the first semester of 2026, the volume has already reached 178 million trips.
Service expansion has also seen the number of Jabodetabek Commuter Line stations grow from 71 in 2015 to 85 in 2026, including the addition of Jatake Station and Jakarta International Stadium Station. Operationally, the number of daily KRL trips increased from 881 in 2015 to 1,063 in 2025, a rise of approximately 21 per cent.
Throughout 2025, the Bogor line served approximately 155 million trips, followed by the Cikarang line with 85.9 million, the Rangkasbitung line with 77.6 million, the Tangerang line with 27.3 million, and the Tanjung Priok line with approximately 3.5 million.
Future development of the Jabodetabek Commuter Line is directed towards strengthening capacity, improving intermodal integration, developing digital services, and supporting transit-oriented urban development. Such steps will require collaboration between KAI, KAI Commuter, the Government, and all relevant stakeholders.
