KAI Installs Iron Gates at Unauthorised Level Crossing Near Train Accident Site
KAI has begun installing iron gates at an unauthorised level crossing on Jalan Ampera in Bekasi City, near the site of the train accident at Bekasi Timur Station. The installation started this afternoon.
Observations by detikcom at the location on Wednesday (29/4/2026) showed that the iron gates were being installed by several KAI personnel. The installation involved setting up iron stakes as supports for the gates.
The iron stakes were placed near pre-dug holes and secured with cement. Each stake was embedded at four points on both sides of the level crossing.
During the installation process, KAI personnel were assisted by the Transportation Agency (Dishub), police, and TNI. All personnel worked together to manage traffic flow for vehicles passing through the level crossing.
Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi has ordered KAI to immediately install automatic gates at existing level crossings. Dudy stated that installing the gates is a short-term step to prevent accidents from recurring.
“The most important thing is to address the short-term aspects first, identifying which crossings need gates installed immediately,” said Dudy during a trial run of the KRL on the Bekasi-Cikarang route on Wednesday (29/4).
Dudy noted that repairing the gates aligns with instructions from President Prabowo Subianto. He said authorities would issue warnings and take enforcement actions, including closing unauthorised level crossings.
“So we will regulate all unlicensed crossings or those that endanger train travel. We will repair them and request that no new crossings be added, as that would complicate matters. Because more crossings would also increase train travel times,” Dudy explained.
Dudy outlined that solutions involving the construction of underpasses or flyovers are being considered. He said extensive discussions with various parties are still needed for these long-term solutions.
“Flyovers or underpasses take time. So we must expedite the installation of the gates. The process for underpasses or flyovers will still require time,” Dudy said.
He added that Prabowo has requested immediate improvements to transport infrastructure. Dudy said the government is still calculating the required budget.
“As conveyed by the President, transport infrastructure is number one priority, which may also include crossings under local government management that we will improve. Infrastructure will continue to be calculated. Each region and location requires different handling. We will calculate it first; I can’t specify here. Of course, there are elements like land, physical construction, and management once it’s operational,” he concluded.
