KAI hands over eight suspects of train stone-throwing to law enforcement
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 1 Jakarta has handed over eight suspects involved in throwing stones at trains to law enforcement agencies to undergo legal proceedings in accordance with applicable regulations.
“All apprehended perpetrators have been handed over to the police to be processed according to existing legal provisions,” stated Franoto Wibowo, Manager of Public Relations for KAI Daop 1 Jakarta, in a written statement in Lebak on Wednesday.
Data recorded up to 3 June 2026 shows that 19 cases of stone-throwing at trains have occurred within the Daop 1 Jakarta region. Of these, eight cases have been resolved, with most perpetrators—many under the age of 17—arrested and facing legal action.
Consequently, Daop 1 Jakarta is calling upon teachers and parents to increase supervision and education for children ahead of the school holidays to prevent further incidents. According to Franoto, any stone or object thrown at a train poses a potentially lethal threat. When a train travels at high speeds, a thrown stone can shatter windows, injure the faces and eyes of passengers, strike the driver, or even cause accidents that endanger many lives.
“This is not a game, nor is it ordinary mischief. This is an action that can take lives,” he emphasised. He noted that many perpetrators are children or adolescents who do not yet understand the magnitude of the risks involved.
As the school holidays approach, KAI urges parents to monitor their children’s activities while they are away from home and to remind them not to play near railway tracks. Teachers and schools are also expected to incorporate safety messages for students before the holiday period begins.
KAI emphasised that perpetrators of stone-throwing can face criminal sanctions. Under Article 323, paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code (KUHP) Number 1 of 2024, any person who causes danger to public railway traffic can be sentenced to a maximum of seven years in prison. Furthermore, Law Number 23 of 2007 concerning Railways, Article 180, prohibits any person from performing actions that cause damage to or the malfunction of railway facilities and infrastructure.
“Do not consider stone-throwing as mere joking. Once caught, they must face legal processes, police investigations, and the risk of a disrupted future. Therefore, never attempt to throw anything at a train in any form,” he added.
KAI Daop 1 Jakarta’s operational area covers DKI Jakarta, Banten, and parts of West Java up to Cikampek.
