KAI Group Serves 307.86 Million Passengers, Rail Remains Relevant Amid Growing Mobility
Throughout January–July 2026, KAI Group served 307,860,743 passengers, an increase of 8.32% compared with 284,202,884 passengers in the same period last year. The figure reflects the growing scale of public mobility and the need for transport modes capable of handling high volumes of journeys.
In this context, rail offers advantages in terms of capacity. According to KAI’s 2025 Sustainability Report, a single train set can illustratively replace around 160 cars or 560 motorcycles. Passenger rail journeys also produce approximately 41 grams of CO₂ per passenger per kilometre.
Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, said discussions about low-emission transport are becoming increasingly relevant to everyday life because every journey involves choices about mode, capacity, time and energy use.
“What the public ultimately needs is simple: journeys that are easy and comfortable. When one train set can carry many people at once, the benefits are also felt in more efficient use of space and energy,” Anne said.
The large volume of journeys has made energy management within operational environments a key focus. By the end of 2025, KAI had developed solar power plants at 92 locations with a total capacity of 4,430.65 kWp, or around 4.43 MWp. This development forms part of a decarbonisation strategy targeting emission reductions of approximately 166,873 tonnes of CO₂e by 2030.
Similar efficiency measures have been applied to water use. In 2025, KAI’s water consumption was recorded at 716.30 megalitres, a reduction of 203.93 megalitres, or 22.16%, compared with 920.23 megalitres in 2024. This resource management is carried out alongside the use of biodiesel, waste management, and the provision of facilities supporting the reduction of single-use plastics.
According to Anne, the increase in journeys serves as a reminder that the future mobility challenge is not solely about adding travel capacity, but also about how that capacity is used more carefully.
“The higher the demand for travel, the more important it is to provide modes capable of moving many people efficiently. That is where public transport has an increasingly significant role in supporting public mobility,” Anne said.
KAI expects public travel patterns to continue evolving alongside urban growth, economic activity, education, employment and tourism. Strengthening high-capacity public transport is therefore an important part of ensuring that mobility growth can be accommodated with more controlled use of space and energy.
“Rail will continue to play a role in delivering journeys that are relevant to today’s public needs, while being better prepared for future mobility demands,” Anne concluded.
