PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Group has recorded transporting 214,045,803 passengers from January to May 2026, reflecting high public mobility and the role of rail transport in supporting connectivity and national economic growth.

Vice President of Corporate Communication KAI, Anne Purba, stated that the customer growth demonstrates the increasingly strong role of rail-based transport in supporting public connectivity across various regions of Indonesia. “Throughout January to May 2026, KAI Group served 214,045,803 customers, an increase of 7.20 percent compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 199,663,907 customers,” Anne said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.

She noted that the largest contributor to KAI Group’s passenger volume came from KAI Commuter, which served 169,047,494 customers, up 6.24 percent from 159,111,614 customers in January–May 2025. “With this volume, KAI Commuter is one of the largest rail-based mass transit systems in Southeast Asia,” she said. Every day, this service connects residential areas with centres of employment, education, commerce, and public services in the Jakarta metropolitan area and its surroundings. This role is increasingly important as the growth of supporting areas drives rising daily commuter travel needs.

Beyond daily mobility, intercity travel growth also shows strengthening connectivity between regions. From January to May 2026, KAI’s Long-Distance and Local Trains served 24,372,733 customers, an increase of 9.94 percent compared to 22,168,570 customers in the same period last year. This travel flow connects various economic centres, industrial zones, educational cities, trade hubs, and tourist destinations spread across Java and Sumatra. This connectivity supports the movement of labour, business activities, and the development of the domestic tourism sector.

In modern urban services, LRT Jabodebek served 13,211,856 customers, a 23.16 percent increase compared to 10,727,798 customers in January–May 2025. The customer growth shows the increasingly strong role of rail-based public transport in supporting mobility in the Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, and Bekasi areas. Integration with KRL, intercity trains, bus services, and transit-oriented development (TOD) areas expands the public’s travel range within a single interconnected transport ecosystem.

Services connecting the public with air transport also continued to grow. KAI Bandara served 2,905,389 customers, a 1.78 percent increase compared to 2,854,707 customers in the same period last year, through the Srilelawangsa Train service in Medan and the YIA Train in Yogyakarta.
