PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) continues to strengthen intercity, urban, economic centre, airport, and regional connectivity through the KAI Group transport ecosystem. Throughout January to July 2026, KAI Group served 307,860,743 passengers, an increase of 8.32% compared to the 284,202,884 passengers served in the same period in 2025. The increase was recorded across KAI’s long-distance and local train services, KAI Commuter, LRT Jabodebek, KAI Wisata, the Makassar–Parepare train, KAI Bandara, and the Whoosh high-speed train managed by KCIC.

KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that this growth demonstrates the expanding role of rail-based transport in meeting the public’s travel needs, from daily mobility and intercity journeys to airport access, regional travel, premium travel experiences, and high-speed connectivity.

“Each service has a complementary function. When intercity travel is connected with urban transport, airports, regional services, premium travel, and high-speed trains, the public has more options to plan their journeys according to their needs. This is the connectivity that KAI Group continues to strengthen,” said Anne.

For KAI’s long-distance and local trains, passenger numbers reached 35,257,646, a 7.63% increase from 32,758,315 in January–July 2025. These services connect major cities, residential areas, government centres, educational institutions, trade hubs, industrial zones, and various regions in Java and Sumatra. This connectivity supports public travel for work, study, business activities, visiting family, and reaching various travel destinations.

The largest volume growth came from services managed by KAI Commuter, which served 242,932,764 passengers, up 6.65% from 227,781,787 passengers in the same period last year. The Commuter Line supports the public’s daily mobility by connecting residential areas with employment centres, educational institutions, commercial districts, and public services. Its large mass transport capacity provides space for more people to use public transport in their daily activities.

In modern urban transport, LRT Jabodebek also recorded a 20.96% growth, from 15,772,638 passengers to 19,079,347 passengers. LRT Jabodebek connects Jakarta with the satellite areas of Bekasi and Cibubur using Grade of Automation Level 3 technology. The presence of this service strengthens metropolitan area connectivity while showcasing the advancement of domestically developed railway technology in supporting urban mobility.

Services managed by KAI Wisata recorded 188,860 passengers, a 49.95% increase compared to 125,945 passengers in January–July 2025. This growth reflects the increasing interest in travel experiences offering varied levels of comfort and service character. KAI Wisata presents services such as the Luxury Train, Panoramic Train, Special Train, and Tourist Train, allowing passengers to enjoy journeys with premium facilities while viewing Indonesia’s distinctive landscapes and panoramas from inside the train.

Connectivity strengthening is also taking place in Sulawesi through the Makassar–Parepare train. Throughout January–July 2026, this service served 206,651 passengers, a 13.62% increase from 181,876 passengers in the same period the previous year. The presence of the railway in Sulawesi expands public mass transport options while supporting inter-regional connectivity, economic activity centres, and the various areas it traverses.

Meanwhile, services managed by KAI Bandara served 4,073,492 passengers in January–July 2026, a 0.20% increase from 4,065,417 passengers in the same period in 2025. These services include the Srilelawangsa Train and the Yogyakarta International Airport Train, which strengthen public access to urban areas and airports. Rail-based connectivity to airports provides travel options with more measurable timing and supports the connection between air and land transport.

In South Sumatra, the LRT Sumsel served 2,604,587 passengers throughout January–July 2026. This service connects Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport Station to DJKA Station, passing through the centre of Palembang City and the Jakabaring area. This route provides the public with rail-based access to the airport, city centre, residential areas, activity centres, and Jakabaring Sport City, thereby expanding urban mobility options in Palembang and supporting connectivity to various activity hubs. LRT Sumsel operates on a line with 13 stations connecting the SMB II Airport area to DJKA.

For high-speed train services, Whoosh, managed by KCIC, served 3,517,396 passengers, a 0.01% increase compared to 3,516,906 passengers in January–July 2025. Whoosh represents a leap forward in Indonesian transportation through the presence of a high-speed train service that shortens the Jakarta–Bandung travel time. Its presence expands intercity travel options while bringing Indonesia into the era of high-speed train technology.

Anne stated that the diversity of these services forms an increasingly complete transport ecosystem. The Commuter Line, LRT Jabodebek, and LRT Sumsel support urban mobility; long-distance and local trains connect cities and regions; KAI Bandara strengthens airport access; KAI Wisata presents premium travel experiences; the Makassar–Parepare train expands rail connectivity in Sulawesi; while Whoosh delivers high-speed intercity connectivity.

“The more connected public transport services are, the greater the benefits the public can feel. Journeys become easier, access to centres of activity becomes wider, and public transport becomes a more reliable choice for various travel needs,” Anne concluded.
