KAI Group and INKA Investment in Railway Facilities Reaches Over Rp14.6 Trillion
Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Group continues to strengthen its collaboration with PT Industri Kereta Api (Persero) or INKA in the procurement and renewal of national railway facilities. The total investment value of the contracts is estimated to be between Rp14.68 trillion and Rp14.88 trillion.
The collaboration includes the procurement of Stainless Steel New Generation carriages for intercity services, new Commuter Line trains and a retrofit programme, LRT Jabodetabek trainsets, luxury carriages, and flat wagons to support freight transport in South Sumatra.
KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that the continuity of procurement provides room for the national railway industry to increase production capacity, human resource competence, product quality, and after-sales support. “Procurement requires long-term planning, consistent quality, and timely completion. KAI Group encourages professional collaboration with INKA to meet operational needs while strengthening the capabilities of the national railway industry,” Anne said.
Under the 2023–2027 replacement programme, KAI ordered 612 units of Stainless Steel New Generation carriages from INKA. These 612 carriages are formed into 56 trainsets with a procurement contract value of Rp5.5 trillion. Of the total 56 trainsets ordered, 40 have been handed over to KAI. To date, 39 trainsets are in operation serving customers, while one trainset is in the operational preparation stage.
The procurement of Stainless Steel New Generation carriages is intended to replace older rolling stock. The presence of these new trainsets supports improved travel reliability, facility standardisation, and customer comfort on intercity rail services. “A total of 39 Stainless Steel New Generation trainsets produced by INKA are already in service. This renewal is carried out in stages to maintain travel quality and fleet readiness,” Anne added.
For urban transport services, KAI Group is also collaborating with INKA on the procurement of new Commuter Line trains and a retrofit programme, with a total investment reaching Rp4.07 trillion. The investment for new Commuter Line trains covers 16 trainsets or 192 carriages, valued at nearly Rp3.83 trillion. Meanwhile, the retrofit programme covers two trainsets with a value of more than Rp238.63 billion. Of the 16 new Commuter Line trainsets produced by INKA, seven trainsets or 84 carriages are already serving customers. The remaining nine trainsets are continuing through the stages of production, testing, certification, and operational preparation. Each trainset undergoes a series of inspections and tests before entering service to ensure it meets safety, reliability, and operational standards for the Jabodetabek Commuter Line.
INKA’s contribution to urban transport also includes the procurement of 31 LRT Jabodebek trainsets. Each trainset consists of six carriages, bringing the total procurement to 186 carriages, with a contract value of around Rp3.9 trillion to Rp4.1 trillion. The INKA-produced LRT Jabodebek trainsets operate using Grade of Automation 3 (GoA3) technology. In the first half of 2026, LRT Jabodebek served 16,018,911 customers, an increase of 22.84 percent compared to the same period in 2025. This growth demonstrates the public’s significant need for urban rail-based transport. The operation of LRT Jabodebek also serves as an important milestone for the national industry in producing mass transport facilities with automated technology.
KAI is also developing premium services through the procurement of 10 luxury carriages, each with a capacity of 26 seats. One additional luxury carriage is allocated as a maintenance reserve to ensure service continuity when other carriages undergo periodic inspections. The total contract value for the luxury carriage procurement reached Rp161.16 billion. This procurement is part of the development of travel services that offer choices of experience and comfort levels according to customer needs.
The collaboration between KAI and INKA also extends to the freight sector through the procurement of 1,125 units of 54-tonne flat wagons valued at Rp1.05 trillion. These wagons are prepared to support increased capacity and efficiency of freight transport in South Sumatra, particularly for coal, which is a source of national electricity supply.
Based on the contract values, the procurement of 612 Stainless Steel New Generation carriages, new and retrofitted Commuter Line trains, 31 LRT Jabodebek trainsets, luxury carriages, and 1,125 flat wagons totals approximately Rp14.68 trillion to Rp14.88 trillion. Anne added that the scale of this procurement demonstrates the size of the railway rolling stock market in Indonesia. Certainty of demand must be accompanied by increased production capacity, supply chain strengthening, consistent quality, timeliness, and after-sales service. “Trust in the national industry is built through product quality and consistency in fulfilling commitments. KAI Group hopes that the collaboration with INKA will continue to produce safe and reliable facilities that support the improvement of public transport and national logistics services,” Anne concluded.
