KAI deploys 25 passenger rolling stock units to Sumatra amid rising customer numbers in Lampung and South Sumatra
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is strengthening passenger service capacity in Lampung and South Sumatra by deploying 25 train units from Operational Region 1 Jakarta to Regional Division IV Tanjungkarang and South Sumatra (Sumbagsel). This follows increased public mobility on railway services in the region. Vice President of Corporate Communications at KAI, Anne Purba, said the reinforcement of rolling stock is to maintain passenger services in Sumatra, particularly on routes experiencing customer volume growth throughout 2026. “Public mobility in Lampung and South Sumatra continues to rise. Therefore, rolling stock readiness must be prepared gradually to maintain service capacity and operational reliability,” she said. According to deployment progress, KAI is sending the units in phases from May to June 2026. The process began with loading at the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT), followed by sea crossing transport, and delivery to Rajabasa. The 25 units consist of economy class (K3), dining (M1), and power generator (P) trains, prepared to support passenger operations in Sumbagsel. The strengthening aligns with customer growth on railway services in Regional Division III Palembang and IV Tanjungkarang. From January to April 2026, passenger volumes in the region have continued to rise. One example is the KA Rajabasa service, which served 301,658 passengers, a 32.92% increase compared to the same period in 2025 (226,946 passengers). Meanwhile, the KA Kuala Stabas service served 246,555 passengers from January to April 2026, up from 237,761 in the same period last year. According to Anne, the trend indicates growing intercity mobility needs in Sumatra, particularly for public transport with high capacity and predictable travel times. KAI continues to synchronise rolling stock deployment, distribution route preparation, and technical coordination for transportation to ensure all stages proceed as per operational plans. “This rolling stock reinforcement is prepared to ensure Sumatra’s service capacity keeps pace with positive customer growth. KAI continuously monitors operational needs across regions to maintain optimal service for the public,” Anne concluded.
