KAI Daop Jogja Temporarily Halts 15 Train Services Following Pacitan Earthquake

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Pacitan, East Java, and was felt as far as the Yogyakarta region on Saturday afternoon, causing state railway operator KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta to temporarily halt 15 train services. Manager of Public Relations for KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta, Feni Novida Saragih, stated that the 15 trains were brought to an extraordinary stop.

"KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta extends its apologies for the inconvenience caused to affected passengers and expresses its gratitude for their patience during this situation," Feni said in a written statement. "Post-earthquake inspection of infrastructure and facilities is a mandatory procedure carried out by KAI to ensure that safety aspects are maintained," she continued.

The trains that were temporarily halted to await post-earthquake infrastructure and rolling stock inspections in Operational Area 6 included: KA 269B Matarmaja (10 minutes), KA 10C Argo Wilis (5 minutes), KA 574a Adi Soemarmo Airport Train (23 minutes), KA 16 Argo Dwipangga (15 minutes), KA 110b Fajar Utama YK (10 minutes), KA 167 Kertanegara (22 minutes), KA 85b Sancaka (13 minutes), KA 714 Yogyakarta-Palur Commuterline (13 minutes), KA 706 Yogyakarta-Palur Commuterline (19 minutes), KA 106b Gajahwong (16 minutes), KA 153 Ranggajati (13 minutes), KA 554 YIA Airport Train (11 minutes), KA 541 YIA Airport Train (12 minutes), KA 188 Joglosemarkerto (26 minutes), and KA 47 Taksaka (21 minutes).

The magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook Pacitan at 2:47 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. There was no tsunami potential resulting from the quake. "It was a tectonic earthquake. BMKG analysis indicates this earthquake has updated parameters with a magnitude of 5.3 at a depth of 53 kilometres. The earthquake’s epicentre was located at coordinates 9.05° South latitude and 111.11° East longitude, precisely in the sea at a distance of 96 kilometres southeast of Pacitan. Tsunami modelling results show that this earthquake did not have tsunami potential," the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) wrote on its official website. The agency also explained that the tremor was felt in several areas, including Yogyakarta city, Bantul, Sleman, and Kulon Progo. "BMKG will continue to monitor aftershock activity and provide updated information to stakeholders and the public," the agency stated.
