KAI Daop 8 Surabaya Utilises Special Train to Conduct Level Crossing Safety Education
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 8 Surabaya, together with the Indonesian Railway Preservation Society (IRPS), held a safety education programme via a Special Train (KLB) on Thursday (17/9), specifically focusing on safety at level crossings.
This activity is part of KAI Daop 8 Surabaya’s commitment to supporting the enhancement of railway travel safety, while also commemorating KAI’s 81st anniversary under the theme “Semakin Melayani” (Serving More).
The Special Train also featured a display of vehicles involved in previous accidents as a visual educational medium. This display serves to provide a real-world illustration to the public regarding the consequences of non-compliance with safety regulations at level crossings.
The education sessions were conducted at JPL 1 Wonokromo, JPL 26 Kalijaten, and JPL 67 Krian, involving various stakeholders, including KAI Commuter, BTP Class I Surabaya, the Surabaya City Transportation Agency, the Sidoarjo Regency Transportation Agency, and other railway enthusiast communities.
At the activity sites, officers and community members directly educated road users through banners, artboards, and various information media. The messages conveyed included correct crossing procedures, understanding signs and warning signals, etiquette at crossings, and steps necessary to prevent accidents.
To strengthen interaction with the public, KAI also provided souvenirs to road users. In addition to being a form of appreciation, these souvenirs are intended to serve as a reminder so that the safety messages conveyed can be continuously applied in daily activities.
The Public Relations Manager of KAI Daop 8 Surabaya, Mahendro Trang Bawono, stated that safety at level crossings is a shared responsibility that requires the care and discipline of all parties.
“Safety is our collective responsibility. Through this activity, we want to invite the public to further understand that every rule at the crossing is made to protect our mutual safety. When the barriers begin to close, let us pause and allow the train to pass safely,” said Mahendro.
According to Mahendro, direct education is one of the important steps in delivering safety messages in an easily understandable manner while encouraging the formation of positive habits within the community.
“We hope that the public will not only know the rules but also make them a habit. When the barriers are closed, let us stop, be patient, and wait until the train has finished passing. A few minutes of waiting is far more meaningful to ensure the safety of train journeys and other road users,” Mahendro added.
KAI Daop 8 Surabaya will continue to strengthen massive and sustainable safety socialisation through collaboration with local governments, regulators, law enforcement, communities, and the public.
This cross-party collaboration is expected to increase public understanding of the risks at level crossings while encouraging the formation of a safety culture, thereby minimising the potential for accidents.
“Serving more means KAI also cares more about public safety. Therefore, we invite all road users to work together to create safe crossings. Stop when the barriers are closed, obey signs and warning signals, and ensure conditions are truly safe before crossing,” Mahendro concluded.
Through consistent and sustainable education, KAI Daop 8 Surabaya, along with all stakeholders, is committed to building a safety culture at level crossings. With mutual care, discipline, and compliance, crossings can become safer and more orderly spaces for all road users.
