KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta Closes Unguarded Level Crossing to Boost Rail Safety
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 6 Yogyakarta continues to collaborate with the relevant authorities to strengthen synergy in improving the safety of rail and road users through the closure of an unguarded level crossing at KM 528+4 on the Sentolo–Rewulu section on Monday (3/8).
“This step is a form of cross-agency collaboration in creating safer, more orderly and safety-conscious transport,” said Deputy Executive Vice President of Daop 6 Yogyakarta, Rahim Ramdhani, in Yogyakarta on Monday.
He said the closure was carried out by installing metal barriers horizontally and vertically, painting, and normalising the route so that it can no longer be used by vehicles, whether two-wheeled or four-wheeled.
The operation proceeded safely, orderly and peacefully, involving the Daop 6 Yogyakarta management, security teams, Railway Line personnel, and supported by the Bantul Transportation Office in an effort to improve safety at the level crossing.
He said that safety at level crossings can only be achieved through collaboration among all stakeholders.
“The closure of this unguarded crossing is a concrete step in reducing the potential for accidents while improving the safety of rail and road users. We appreciate the support of the Bantul Transportation Office and all parties who have worked together so that this activity could be carried out well. Safety is a shared responsibility, so cross-agency collaboration is key to achieving safe and reliable transport,” said Rahim.
Meanwhile, Public Relations Manager of KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta, Feni Novida Saragih, said the closure of the unguarded crossing is part of a joint commitment between KAI, the regional government and the Transportation Office to improve transport safety.
“KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta consistently strengthens coordination with the Transportation Office, the regional government, security forces and all stakeholders to evaluate and address high-risk crossings. Through this collaboration, it is hoped that safer crossings can be created while raising public awareness to use only official crossings and not to reopen access that has been closed,” said Feni.
Feni added that this closure brings the total number of illegal crossings closed by Daop 6 Yogyakarta to ten in 2026.
The public is expected to support this step by using the official crossings available and obeying all signs and safety rules when crossing railway lines.
The closure is in line with Law No. 23 of 2007 on Railways, which prioritises safety as the main concern in the operation of rail transport.
KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta expressed its appreciation to the Transportation Office, the regional government, security forces and the public for their support in carrying out this activity.
“Going forward, the established synergy will continue to be strengthened through safety awareness programmes and the handling of high-risk crossings as a joint effort to reduce the number of accidents at railway crossings, and to achieve rail travel that is safe, secure, comfortable and sustainable,” said Feni.
