PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Daop 5 Purwokerto has taken decisive action by closing an illegal level crossing in Jeruklegi Wetan Village, Jeruklegi District, Cilacap Regency, on Thursday (28 May). The closure, carried out at KM 375+8/9 on the Kawunganten Station–Jeruklegi Station section, aims to ensure the safety of railway operations and road users.

KAI Daop 5 Purwokerto’s Public Relations Manager, M. As’ad Habibuddin, stated that the move was urgent due to the high volume of train traffic in the area. Currently, around 132 train services pass through the Daop 5 Purwokerto region daily.

“The average interval between trains is just 12–14 minutes. With such high frequency, safe space at level crossings is extremely limited. The presence of illegal crossings poses a serious risk of fatal accidents,” As’ad said in a statement on Thursday (28 May 2026).

As’ad added that closing illegal crossings is part of the company’s commitment to reducing accident rates. KAI has noted that railway level crossing accidents remain a serious concern, given the consequences extend beyond material losses to human lives.

In addition to physical closures, KAI Daop 5 Purwokerto continues to intensify public awareness campaigns among communities living along the railway tracks. Residents are urged not to reopen closed illegal crossings or establish new ones.

“We urge the public to comply with traffic regulations and use only officially designated crossings equipped with safety facilities. Before crossing, always stop briefly, check both directions, and confirm no trains are approaching,” he stressed.

KAI emphasised that railway safety is a shared responsibility. The company calls for support from local governments and public awareness to adhere to regulations, ensuring safe and comfortable rail transport for all.
