KAI Daop 4 Semarang Steps Up Patrols During School Holidays, Warns Against Trespassing on Railway Tracks
As the school holiday season begins, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Operational Area 4 Semarang, Central Java, is increasing surveillance along railway tracks to anticipate public activities, particularly by children and teenagers, that could endanger train journeys and their own safety. The heightened supervision is being carried out through routine patrols by security officers and track inspectors, as well as coordination with local authorities and communities living near the rail lines. This measure is a preventive effort against playing around railway tracks and acts of vandalism such as throwing stones or other objects at passing trains.
KAI Daop 4 Semarang Public Relations Manager, Luqman Arif, stated that the school holiday period often leads to increased outdoor activity among children, including in dangerous areas like railway tracks. “Railway tracks are not a place for playing or any other activity. Besides being extremely dangerous for personal safety, the presence of people on the tracks can disrupt train operations. We urge parents to increase supervision of their children during the holiday period so they do not play around the railway lines,” Luqman said on Friday (26/6).
In addition to playing on the tracks, KAI Daop 4 also highlighted the dangers of vandalism involving the throwing of stones, wood, or other objects at trains. Such actions not only damage railway assets but also have the potential to cause injuries to passengers and crew members on board. Between January and June 2026, one stone-throwing incident occurred on the Kalibodri Station to Weleri Station segment in Kendal Regency on Sunday, 31 May 2026, at approximately 5:50 p.m. Western Indonesia Time. Train 269A Matarmaja, serving the Malang–Semarang–Jakarta route, was passing through the segment when its carriages were pelted with stones by irresponsible individuals, resulting in a cracked window on economy carriage 6.
“We remind the public that throwing objects at trains is a violation of the law and carries criminal sanctions. KAI strongly condemns acts of vandalism such as stone-throwing at trains because they can endanger journeys and injure passengers or KAI personnel. We will take legal action against anyone caught throwing objects at trains,” Luqman stressed.
As a form of anticipation during the school holidays, KAI Daop 4 Semarang is also enforcing the prohibition on activities within the railway right-of-way as stipulated in Law Number 23 of 2007 on Railways, Article 181 Paragraph (1). The law states that every person is prohibited from being within the railway utility zone; dragging, moving, placing, or transferring objects on the rails or crossing the railway line; or using the railway line for purposes other than railway transportation. Violations of this regulation can result in criminal sanctions of imprisonment for a maximum of three months or a fine of up to Rp15 million, as stipulated in Article 199 of Law 23/2007. The prohibition on throwing objects at trains is also regulated in Law Number 23 of 2007 on Railways, where Article 180 states that every person is prohibited from removing, damaging, or committing acts that result in the damage and/or malfunction of railway infrastructure and facilities, with a maximum prison sentence of three months.
KAI Daop 4 Semarang invites all elements of society to jointly maintain railway travel safety by refraining from any activity on the tracks and to immediately report any actions that could potentially endanger train journeys. “Railway travel safety is a shared responsibility. Public support and awareness are essential to ensure that train journeys remain safe, secure, and comfortable during the school holiday period,” Luqman concluded.
