PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded improved energy efficiency in supporting its operational activities. Throughout 2025, the company’s total energy consumption was 10,107,302 gigajoules (GJ), a 15.39% decrease compared to 11,945,467 GJ in 2024. This decline occurred alongside an expansion in the scale of its services. In 2025, the number of customers used as the basis for calculating energy intensity reached 492,657,571, an 8.67% increase from 453,343,189 in 2024. Freight volume also rose from 69,201,670 tonnes in 2024 to 69,571,601 tonnes in 2025. Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, stated that increasing energy productivity is a crucial part of maintaining sustainable railway services. Energy management is carried out through consumption measurement, periodic monitoring, governance strengthening, and evaluation across all of KAI’s operational areas. Based on KAI’s 2025 Sustainability Report, energy intensity per customer fell from 0.0263 GJ per customer in 2024 to 0.0205 GJ per customer in 2025, a decrease of around 22.05%. Efficiency was also seen in freight services, with energy intensity per tonne of goods dropping 15.82% from 0.1726 GJ per tonne to 0.1453 GJ per tonne. Energy intensity against revenue also fell by 14.57%. In terms of energy sources, consumption in 2025 was dominated by B40/B35 biodiesel, totalling 255,047.87 kilolitres, down from 305,585.40 kilolitres in 2024. KAI also utilises new renewable energy from solar power plants and electricity supplied by PLN. The company implemented B40 fuel in its operations in 2025 and built mixing and refuelling facilities in five locations. By the end of 2025, KAI had begun preparations for testing B50, which was gradually implemented starting in July 2026. The efficiency achievements are increasingly relevant as KAI Group’s customer numbers grow. In the first half of 2026, KAI Group served 258,993,359 customers, a 7.55% increase from the same period in 2025. This growth was driven by various services, including long-distance and local trains, KAI Commuter, LRT Jabodebek, and KAI Wisata. Freight services also handled 32,498,043 tonnes of goods during the period. KAI continues to conduct energy management training for its workers to support efficiency and sustainability goals.
