KAI confirms Rajabasa train continues operating despite Anak Krakatau eruption
The eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau does not mean that the Rajabasa train service has been suspended. However, KAI continues to monitor travel conditions and coordinate with relevant parties.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Regional Division III Palembang has confirmed that operations of the Rajabasa train on the Kertapati–Tanjungkarang route (return) will continue to run according to schedule despite the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
KAI Divre III Palembang Public Relations Manager Aida Suryanti said in Palembang on Sunday that customer safety remains the company’s priority. KAI continues to monitor travel conditions and coordinate with relevant parties to anticipate potential disruptions to train operations.
“The eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau does not mean that the Rajabasa train service has been suspended. However, KAI continues to monitor travel conditions and coordinate with relevant parties as part of efforts to maintain train travel safety,” she said.
According to the latest report from the Geological Agency, Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity remains at Level III, or Alert status. On 5 September 2026, the volcano was reported to be experiencing continuous eruptions accompanied by rumbling sounds.
The Geological Agency has urged the public to increase vigilance against potential eruption hazards, including lava flows, ejection of incandescent rocks, pyroclastic clouds, and heavy ashfall.
In connection with these conditions, KAI Divre III has advised Rajabasa train passengers travelling to Lampung or in the opposite direction to continue following official information and recommendations from the Geological Agency, the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), BMKG, and local governments.
“Specifically for members of the public who will travel using the Rajabasa train to Lampung, we urge them to always follow official information and recommendations from the Geological Agency, PVMBG, BMKG, and local governments,” she said.
KAI has also advised passengers to continue wearing masks during the journey, particularly if there is exposure to dust or volcanic ash in the surrounding environment.
In addition to the activity of Mount Anak Krakatau, KAI Divre III has also reminded the public about the declining air quality in Palembang and several areas of South Sumatra due to haze from forest and land fires.
Based on BMKG air quality monitoring, the concentration of Particulate Matter (PM2.5) at the Musi 2 Palembang Monitoring Station on Sunday reached a hazardous category.
“We hope passengers remain calm, do not panic, and always obtain information from official sources. Most importantly, take care of your health, wear a mask when necessary, and do not force travel if health conditions or the environmental situation do not allow it,” said Aida.
