KAI CEO: Strengthening railway level crossing safety continues
Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Bobby Rasyidin has affirmed that safety improvements at level crossings are being continuously strengthened to safeguard railway operations and communities living near operational lines.
Bobby said enhancing level crossing safety is a crucial part of maintaining the safety of train journeys as well as the public who carry out activities around railway lines.
“Safety is the top priority in railway operations. KAI continues to undertake various safety improvement measures through the construction of supporting facilities, strengthening of guarding, and collaboration with the government and the public,” Bobby said in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Saturday.
KAI is accelerating its level crossing safety improvement programme. As of 25 August 2026, 145 of the 190 priority safety improvement sites have been completed, representing 77.37 percent progress.
The programme includes the construction and installation of safety facilities, guard houses, signage, safety equipment, and communication devices.
“We urge all road users to always be careful and comply with the rules when crossing level crossings,” Bobby said.
He explained that level crossing management is carried out based on mapping of conditions and the level of need on the ground.
“Each location has different characteristics, so handling is carried out in a measured manner so that safety improvements can run effectively and provide benefits to the community,” Bobby added.
Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI Anne Purba added that based on the mapping conducted, there are 3,674 level crossings in KAI’s operational areas, consisting of 1,864 guarded crossings, 907 unguarded crossings, and 903 unrecorded or unguarded crossings.
“Of that number, 1,810 crossings are the focus of safety improvement efforts,” Anne said.
As an initial step, KAI has verified 1,638 level crossings. The verification results identified 1,404 crossings as targets for safety improvements based on field conditions and handling needs.
Anne said the 190 priority safety improvement sites for 2026 are spread across various KAI operational regions.
The work includes procuring supervisory consultants, providing human resources for level crossing gatekeepers, constructing guard posts, installing signage, safety facilities, and communication devices.
In addition to facility improvements, KAI is also strengthening the readiness of level crossing gatekeepers.
“The contract for level crossing gatekeepers was signed on 12 August 2026, on-the-job training has commenced, and education and training for gatekeepers is being carried out in stages,” Anne explained.
Anne urged the public to always prioritise safety when crossing level crossings. Road users must stop before crossing, ensure conditions are safe, obey traffic signs, and not force their way through when a train is approaching.
“Safety at level crossings requires shared discipline. Simple behaviour such as stopping, observing the surroundings and ensuring it is safe before crossing can prevent the risk of accidents,” Anne said.
