KAI blacklists sexual harassment offenders on trains
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has imposed strict sanctions on a passenger proven to have committed sexual harassment during train travel by adding them to the company’s blacklist. “The blacklist sanction is part of KAI’s zero-tolerance policy towards any actions that compromise passenger safety, security, and comfort,” said Mahendro Trang Bawono, KAI Daop 8 Surabaya’s Head of Public Relations, in Surabaya on Sunday (31 May). The sanctioned individual is prohibited from using KAI’s rail services for a specified period under company regulations. KAI will take all reports seriously. On-site staff will immediately assist victims, secure suspects, conduct initial investigations, and coordinate with law enforcement if criminal elements are found. KAI ensures the handling process prioritises victim protection and comfort. Between 2024 and 2026, KAI Daop 8 Surabaya has taken strict action by blacklisting nine sexual harassment offenders to serve as a deterrent and protect passengers from future incidents. “KAI hopes these strict measures send a clear message that there is no tolerance for sexual harassment in rail transport,” he added. In addition to monitoring, KAI actively implements education and awareness programmes on preventing sexual harassment through station and onboard information media, company social media, and collaborative efforts with communities, volunteers, and other stakeholders. KAI is committed to continuously enhancing railway safety and security systems. Efforts include installing CCTV at stations and on trains, security patrols, increased in-transit monitoring, and providing easily accessible reporting channels for passengers. “We urge all passengers to work together in creating a safe and respectful travel environment. Passengers are advised to report immediately to staff if they experience, witness, or become aware of any sexual harassment or criminal activity,” Mahendro said. (FL) During the extended holiday period from 26 May to 1 June 2026, all stations in the Daop 8 Surabaya region are projected to serve 239,134 passengers. Cumulatively during the Eid al-Adha extended holiday period from 26 May to 1 June 2026, KAI Daop 8 Surabaya is projected to serve 170,865 passengers. Unauthorised level crossings and those not meeting safety standards pose a high risk of accidents and disruptions to train services. As of April 2026, there are 435 level crossings in the operational area of KAI Daop 8 Surabaya. Although the incident occurred outside Daop 8’s operational area, KAI has implemented comprehensive preventive measures to ensure safety.
