KAI Bandara Medan Transports 1 Million Passengers in the First Quarter of 2026
KAI Bandara recorded positive performance in passenger transport during the first quarter of 2026 in North Sumatra. This is reflected in the increased number of users of the Srilelawangsa train service on the Medan-Kualanamu Airport route or Medan-Binjai-Kualabingai compared to the same period in the previous year.
PT Railink, as the operator of KAI Bandara Medan, operates the Srilelawangsa train as an airport train, part of the Public Service Obligation (PSO) subsidy programme in North Sumatra. For the period January to March 2026, a total of 1 million passengers were transported, an increase of 6.21 percent compared to the first quarter of 2025 with 900,000 people.
In detail: the Medan-Kualanamu Airport route carried 406,000 passengers, up 7.75 percent from the same period last year with 377,000 passengers. The Medan-Binjai-Kualabingai route recorded 651,000 passengers, an increase of 5.26 percent compared to the same time with 618,000 people.
KAI Bandara Medan’s President Director, Porwanto Handry Nugroho, stated that this achievement is the result of the company’s consistency in maintaining service quality and adaptability to customer needs. According to him, the positive growth in the first quarter of 2026 is an indicator that KAI Bandara’s services are increasingly relevant to the public.
“We continue to strive to provide transportation services that are not only on time and safe, but also offer comfort and easy access, especially in supporting connectivity to the airport and supporting areas in North Sumatra,” said Porwanto in a written statement on Tuesday, 14 April 2026.
KAI Bandara continues to strengthen collaboration with various stakeholders and carry out innovations to improve services. Porwanto is optimistic that the growth trend will continue along with increasing public mobility and strengthened transport connectivity in the North Sumatra region.
During the 2026 Eid transport period, from 11-23 March 2026, KAI Bandara transported 155,212 passengers. The Medan-Kualanamu Airport route carried 63,000 passengers and the Medan-Binjai-Kualabingai route 92,244 passengers. KAI Bandara prepared 361,000 seats from 11 March to 1 April 2026 and operated 44 trips every day to ensure smooth homecoming and return flows, especially in the Medan area and surroundings.
“We urge all passengers to always look after their carry-on luggage. Arrive early at the station, utilise digital services for ticket purchases that can be booked a week before departure so that the journey is smooth and comfortable,” said Porwanto.
