KAI and Transport Ministry Strengthen Rail Services During School Holidays
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) and the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) are strengthening rail transport services during the school holidays through a 30 percent discount programme on economy class tickets, designed to enhance public mobility, tourism, and regional economic activity. “This discount programme provides important support for people wishing to travel during the school holiday period with more affordable, well-planned, and comfortable travel costs,” said KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday. She noted that the school holiday period is entering its first weekend, presenting an opportunity for the public to plan family trips, tourism, visits to hometowns, and regional economic mobility at more affordable costs via rail services. KAI is therefore encouraging the public to take advantage of the 30 percent transport discount programme from the government, administered through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation. The programme applies to Commercial Economy Class train journeys from 20 June to 5 July 2026. Ticket bookings can be made before the travel period, while the discount can be used by passengers for departures starting Saturday, 20 June 2026. “This weekend could be the right time for passengers to utilise the government programme through DJKA Kemenhub, especially for families wanting to holiday, visit relatives, or make productive intercity journeys,” said Anne. Based on KAI data as of 19 June 2026 at 10.00 WIB, the cumulative capacity for the 2026 school holiday transport discount programme reached 1,174,624 seats. Of that total, 419,319 tickets had been booked, representing 35.70 percent of available capacity. Consequently, 755,305 seats remain available for public use for travel up to 5 July 2026. Anne stated that customer interest appears strong at the start of the departure period. The highest volume so far is on 20 June 2026 with 58,993 passengers, followed by 21 June 2026 with 53,299 passengers. Bookings are also spread across various other departure dates, including 22 June 2026 with 32,541 passengers, 28 June 2026 with 32,280 passengers, and 26 June 2026 with 31,328 passengers. In the following week, booking volumes continue to follow public travel needs. Departures on 27 June 2026 recorded 27,498 passengers, 5 July 2026 with 25,549 passengers, 25 June 2026 with 21,924 passengers, and 3 July 2026 with 20,781 passengers. Other dates still have seat availability for passengers to choose. The five trains with the highest booking volumes under the 2026 school holiday discount programme are KA Joglosemarkerto with 19,239 passengers, KA Sawunggalih with 18,030 passengers, KA Majapahit with 17,364 passengers, KA Pangrango with 17,132 passengers, and KA Progo with 14,742 passengers. Meanwhile, the five departure stations with the highest volumes are Pasar Senen with 61,283 passengers, Yogyakarta with 31,071 passengers, Lempuyangan with 20,927 passengers, Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng with 18,953 passengers, and Bekasi with 17,716 passengers. She added that the discount programme helps the public manage travel costs while encouraging tourism movement and economic activity in various regions. KAI has prepared operational services, station readiness, facility cleanliness, customer service, and digital channels to support smooth travel during the school holiday period. Passengers can book tickets and check seat availability through the Access by KAI application, the official website kai.id, station counters, and other official sales channels. KAI urges passengers to arrive at stations early, ensure the name on the ticket matches their identity, pay attention to departure schedules, and carry luggage in accordance with regulations. Passengers are also reminded to monitor travel information through official KAI channels. “There are still more than 755,000 seats available,” Anne noted, inviting the public to take advantage of the transport discount by planning journeys early and checking schedule options through Access by KAI to secure the most suitable trip. “KAI is ready to serve the school holidays safely, comfortably, and affordably,” said Anne.
