KAI adds Jakarta train capacity after Anak Krakatau's eruption

Mahendro Trang Bawono, public relations manager for KAI’s Surabaya regional division, said the capacity includes 10,572 seats on regular trains and two additional services.

“For Jakarta, we have 21 services with 11,554 seats, including regular and additional trains,” Mahendro said here Tuesday.

KAI also increased capacity on the overnight Argo Bromo Anggrek train by 50 seats, from 400 to 450, he said.

The two additional services are the SBI-GMR train from Surabaya Pasarturi to Gambir, with 582 seats, and an additional Gajayana train from Malang to Gambir, with 350 seats.

The SBI-GMR train departs Surabaya Pasarturi at 11 a.m. local time, using three executive coaches and six New Generation Stainless Steel economy coaches.

The additional Gajayana train departs Malang at 8:15 p.m., using a seven-coach executive-class train, Mahendro said.

KAI also increased capacity on the overnight Argo Bromo Anggrek service departing Surabaya Pasarturi at 9:15 p.m.

The number of executive coaches was increased from eight to nine, adding 50 seats and bringing total capacity to 450, he said.

Overall, KAI’s Surabaya regional division is operating 41 train services with a total capacity of 23,384 seats on Tuesday, Mahendro said.

The additional services and capacity are KAI’s response to increased demand for travel to Jakarta following the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption, he said.

“We will continue evaluating travel demand and adjust capacity if necessary, while prioritizing passenger safety, security and comfort,” Mahendro said.
