KAI Accelerates Upgrades to 190 Railway Crossings, 145 Sites Strengthened by August 2026

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is continuing to strengthen safety at level crossings to safeguard railway operations and protect communities living near operational lines.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said safety is the top priority in railway operations. As such, various safety improvement efforts are being carried out through the construction of supporting facilities, strengthening of guarding, and collaboration with the government and the public.

KAI is accelerating its level crossing safety improvement programme. As of 25 August 2026, 145 of the 190 priority safety improvement sites have been completed.

The achievement represents 77.37 percent of the overall target set for 2026.

The safety improvement programme includes the construction and installation of various supporting facilities, including guard posts, signage, safety equipment, and communication devices.

Bobby urged all road users to exercise greater caution when passing through level crossings.

“We urge all road users to always be careful and obey the rules when crossing level crossings,” he said.

According to Bobby, the handling of each crossing is based on mapping of conditions and the level of need on the ground. This is because the characteristics of each location are not always the same.

“Each location has different characteristics, so the handling is carried out in a measured manner so that safety improvements can run effectively and provide benefits to the community,” Bobby added.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba explained that, based on the company’s mapping, there are 3,674 level crossings across KAI’s operational areas.

Of that number, the level crossings consist of both guarded and unguarded locations.

The breakdown is as follows:

• 1,864 guarded crossings.

• 907 unguarded crossings.

• 903 unrecorded or unguarded crossings.

Anne said that of all these crossings, 1,810 sites are the focus of safety improvement efforts.

“Of that number, there are 1,810 crossings that are the focus of safety improvement efforts,” Anne said.
