KAI Accelerates Safety Improvements at 190 Level Crossings, Construction Progress Reaches 77.37 Percent
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is continuing to accelerate its level crossing safety improvement programme. As of 25 August 2026, 145 of the 190 priority safety improvement locations have been completed, representing 77.37 percent progress. The programme covers the construction and installation of safety facilities, guard houses, signage, safety equipment, and communication devices.
KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said improving level crossing safety is an important part of maintaining the safety of train journeys as well as the public who carry out activities around railway lines.
“Safety is the top priority in railway operations. KAI continues to take various steps to improve safety through the construction of supporting facilities, strengthening guarding, and collaboration with the government and the public. We urge all road users to always be careful and obey the rules when crossing level crossings,” said Bobby.
Bobby explained that the handling of level crossings is carried out based on mapping of conditions and the level of need in the field. “Each location has different characteristics so that handling is carried out in a measured manner so that safety improvements can run effectively and provide benefits to the community,” added Bobby.
KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that based on mapping carried out by KAI, there are 3,674 level crossings in KAI’s operational areas, consisting of 1,864 guarded crossings, 907 unguarded crossings, and 903 unrecorded/unguarded crossings. Of this number, 1,810 crossings are the focus of safety improvement handling.
“As an initial step in handling, KAI has verified 1,638 level crossings. The verification results determined 1,404 crossings as safety improvement targets based on field conditions and handling needs,” said Anne.
Anne said the 2026 programme of 190 priority safety improvement locations is spread across various KAI operational areas. The work includes procuring supervisory consultants, providing human resources for crossing gate guards, constructing guard posts, installing signage, safety facilities, and communication devices.
“In addition to improving facilities, KAI is also strengthening the readiness of crossing gate guard officers. The Crossing Gate Guard Officer contract was signed on 12 August 2026, On Job Training has commenced, and education and training for crossing gate guards is being carried out in stages,” said Anne.
Anne urged the public to always prioritise safety when crossing level crossings. Road users must stop before passing a crossing, ensure conditions are safe, obey traffic signs, and not force their way through when a train is approaching.
“Safety at level crossings requires shared discipline. Simple behaviour such as stopping, observing the surroundings, and ensuring it is safe before crossing can prevent the risk of accidents,” concluded Anne.
