KAHMI urges not to prolong Jusuf Kalla controversy for the sake of unity
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chairman of the KAHMI National Presidium, Ahmad Dolli Kurnia Tanjung, has urged all parties not to prolong the controversy regarding Jusuf Kalla’s statement, hoping that the complainants will reconsider their legal steps to maintain national unity and stability.
Dolli assessed that the recent situation following Jusuf Kalla’s statement has the potential to cause unrest because the issue has widened and risks dividing interfaith relations.
“We hope this matter does not spread further, especially to the legal realm. There is no indication of blasphemy or attempts to divide,” Dolli told reporters after KAHMI’s visit with Jusuf Kalla in South Jakarta on Monday.
He emphasised that there are no elements of incitement or attempts to pit groups against each other in Jusuf Kalla’s statement.
In fact, according to him, several religious figures, including from Christian and Catholic circles, have also provided views that there is no element of religious blasphemy in Jusuf Kalla’s statement.
It should be, he said, that the statements from these religious figures serve as considerations for the complainants not to proceed with the legal process.
Dolli is concerned that if this controversy continues, it could develop into a broader political issue and potentially trigger mutual reporting among community groups.
“If this enters the political realm, the situation could become even more dangerous. There could be prolonged mutual reporting,” he warned.
On that occasion, Dolli also invited all elements of society to focus more on larger national issues, such as the impact of global conflicts on the national economy, energy, and food conditions.
According to him, Indonesia as a pluralistic country has strength in the values of tolerance and unity. Therefore, he stressed the importance of maintaining harmony among faiths.
“The strength of this nation lies in diversity and tolerance. Do not let that be disturbed.”
The 10th and 12th Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla, was reported to the police regarding alleged religious blasphemy over a sermon at the Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Mosque during Ramadan 1447 Hijriah/2026.
Jusuf Kalla was reported by the DPP of the Indonesian Christian Youth Movement (GAMKI) to the Metro Jaya Police regarding that sermon, particularly related to the statement about dying as a martyr. The DPP of GAMKI reported JK on 12 April 2026.
