Kaesang to Contest Legislative Seat in Puan's Electoral District, PKB Says 'Battle Will Be Exciting'

Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) Chairman Kaesang Pangarep is set to contest the 2029 legislative election in the Central Java electoral district. National Awakening Party (PKB) Central Executive Board Chairman Daniel Johan stated that this is the right of every citizen. “That is a matter of each party’s internal policy. In a democracy, all citizens have equal rights to run and compete in legislative elections, including in whichever electoral district they choose,” Daniel told reporters on Monday (27/7/2026). He assessed that if Kaesang indeed runs in the Central Java electoral district, the competition in the region will be fierce. He said that healthy competition is good for democracy. “If true, Central Java will certainly become an exciting battleground; that is normal and indeed healthy for democracy,” he said. “Tight competition encourages all legislative candidates, including those from PKB, to work more optimally and stay close to the community,” he continued. Daniel said PKB remains focused on delivering tangible work for the people. He stated that PKB does not focus on the figures who will be opponents in the contest. “We in PKB focus on performance and real programmes for constituents. Ultimately, the people have their own choice based on personal track records and the track record of parties that have made a real impact on the people,” he said. Previously, Kaesang Pangarep announced his candidacy as a legislative candidate for the 2029 Legislative Election. He is targeting victory in the 2029 election. Kaesang made the announcement while visiting Solo. Initially, Kaesang wanted to meet with Persis Solo supporters. However, he also took the opportunity to visit the PSI Solo Regional Coordination Meeting. Kaesang provided a number of directives for PSI cadres ahead of 2029. The message he emphasised was that there must be no conflict among cadres running in the 2029 election. “I ask for your support to remain solid in order to win the upcoming 2029 election,” Kaesang explained. “The message I conveyed earlier was not my message as General Chairman, but my message as a prospective legislative candidate for the Republic of Indonesia from Central Java Electoral District V,” he continued.
