Kadipaten Pakualaman's Sewandanan Market Returns This Weekend
To commemorate the 214th anniversary of the establishment of the Pakualument Kadipaten, the Pakualaman Kadipaten is set to host the Sewandanan Market this weekend. The event will feature a variety of traditional culinary delights, a cheap food bazaar, and various cultural performances.
The Pakualaman Kadipaten was established on 22 June 1812. This year, the anniversary theme is ‘Rinarasing Astuti Nir Ing Sikara’, which emphasises the importance of building harmony between the physical and spiritual realms through sincere prayer, gratitude, and hope to Almighty God.
“Rinarasing Astuti Nir Ing Sikara reflects the belief that prayers offered with a sincere heart will bring harmony to life,” explained the General Chairperson of the 214th Anniversary of Pakualaman Kadipaten, Bendara Pangeran Haryo (BPH) Kusumo Bimantoro, at Pura Pakualaman on Wednesday evening.
This year’s celebrations are divided into two main components: social welfare programmes in Kulon Progo Regency and the Sewandanan Market, which serves as the peak event at Alun-Alun Sewandanan, Pura Pakualaman.
Regarding social welfare, the Dharma Mulyarja programme recently conducted activities focused on healthy nutrition for stunting prevention and maternal health socialisation in Girimulyo, Kulon Progo Regency, on 6 June. Additionally, a mass circumcision programme, provided entirely free of charge to the community, is scheduled to take place tomorrow (18 June) at the Kulon Progo Regent’s official residence.
As for the Sewandanan Market, the annual event carries the theme ‘Sowing Classic Flavours, Harvesting Authentic Economic Vitality’. This initiative is a collaboration with the Yogyakarta Special Region Department of Agriculture and Food Security, the Department of Cooperatives and SMEs, SiBakul Jogja, and the Yogyakarta Special Region Department of Culture.
“The Sewandanan Market is what people often refer to as a ‘nostalgic market’,” explained BPH Kusumo.
More than 40 selected tenants will present a variety of traditional foods and local handicrafts, alongside a Cheap Food Bazaar facility, on 20 and 21 June 2026 at Alun-Alun Sewandanan, Pura Pakualaman. The Cheap Food Bazaar aims to assist the community in meeting basic needs at affordable prices.
Furthermore, various traditional entertainments will be available daily, including the ‘Klasik Asik’ Jathilan Festival, which provides a platform for local dance troupes and artists to compete for a total development prize of Rp 27 million. On Sunday (21 June), the ‘Mlampah Guyub Sesarengan #5’ healthy walk will serve as the celebration’s climax, open to the general public free of charge.
