SERIE A club, Juventus, is reportedly preparing a major overhaul in the goalkeeping sector for next season. The name of the Indonesian national team goalkeeper who currently plays for Cremonese, Emil Audero, has emerged as one of the strong candidates being considered by the Old Lady.

A report from La Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday (February 27) stated that Juventus management is starting to lose confidence in their current goalkeeping lineup.

The performance of the main goalkeeper, Michele Di Gregorio, and his backup, Mattia Perin, is considered to not meet the club’s expectations to compete at the highest level.

“Speaking of goalkeepers, Juventus is likely to carry out a total overhaul this summer. Perin, whose contract expires in 2027, has expressed his desire to be the starter since last year, while (Carlo) Pinsoglio (the third goalkeeper), who will be 36 years old in March, may decide to retire,” said the Italian media.

Juventus’ need for a new goalkeeper has led them to monitor several names in Serie A. In addition to Ivan Provedel (Lazio) and Lorenzo Montipò (Verona), Emil Audero is a very interesting strategic option.

As a graduate of the Juventus academy who broke into the first team in 2015, Emil has a homegrown status. This rule is crucial for the club in registering players for the Serie A and Champions League competitions without having to sacrifice a foreign player slot.

“Therefore, Juventus is also monitoring a number of mid-tier goalkeepers in Serie A: Ivan Provedel (Lazio), Lorenzo Montipò (Verona), Wladimiro Falcone (Lecce), Federico Ravaglia (Bologna), and Emil Audero (Cremonese) whose contract expires in June and is a graduate of the Juventus academy, an important detail to avoid using up a squad slot in Serie A and the Champions League,” the report added.

However, the goalkeeper, who was born in Mataram, is not projected as the main choice. With four caps for the Indonesian national team, Emil is being prepared to fill the position of an experienced backup goalkeeper.

This season, Emil has performed quite impressively with Cremonese, recording seven clean sheets in 22 matches.

For the main goalkeeper position, Juventus is reportedly shifting its focus to the English Premier League to bring in Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham Hotspur. Vicario is expected to be able to be a leader under the bar, continuing the legacy of Gianluigi Buffon and Wojciech Szczesny.

This move is predicted to not be easy because Juventus will have to compete with Inter Milan, who are also eyeing Vicario as a successor to Yann Sommer.

If the scenario of getting Vicario fails, Juventus has prepared a backup plan by targeting young Atalanta goalkeeper, Marco Carnesecchi.

A reunion between Emil Audero and Juventus will certainly be a highlight, given that he once tasted the sweetness of winning the Scudetto with the Turin club before moving permanently to Sampdoria in 2019.
