Former Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla has provided thousands of state vocational high school (SMK) students across Bengkulu Province with advice on preparing for their future from an early age. ‘Firstly, children must instil dreams and ambitions from now on,’ Jusuf Kalla said in Bengkulu on Tuesday. He delivered this message whilst motivating thousands of students during the closing ceremony of the School Environment Introduction Period (MPLS) for state SMK students across Bengkulu Province at Balai Raya Semarak. ‘However, that dream will only be realised if it is balanced with effort, sacrifice, and prayer, including prayers from parents,’ he added. For Jusuf Kalla, dreams need to be planted from school age because the journey to achieve them requires hard work and sacrifice. He expressed hope that SMK students in Bengkulu would grow into a quality next generation capable of contributing to Indonesia’s progress. Bengkulu Governor Helmi Hasan conveyed a message to the students that the school orientation period was over. ‘Do not let the next three years be filled with more playing than studying. Use your time as best as possible to pursue knowledge and prepare for your future,’ Helmi said. Helmi assessed that the education period at SMK must be taken seriously. Besides gaining knowledge and skills, students also need to build character, which will serve as a foundation when they enter the workforce or pursue further education. He therefore asked teachers and headmasters not only to deliver lessons but also to assist students in the process of character building and developing their potential. ‘To the teachers, headmasters, and education officials, I entrust these sons and daughters of the Red and White to be educated into the best generation of Bengkulu,’ he stated. The meeting of thousands of students with Jusuf Kalla and Helmi Hasan at the ‘Red and White Grand Retreat’ marked the end of the school orientation period and the beginning of their educational journey at SMK.
