Junior Reveals Jokowi's Hiking Habit During UGM Studies

The habit of Indonesia’s 7th President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) of hiking mountains during his university days was revealed once again when he met one of his juniors from the Faculty of Forestry at Gadjah Mada University (UGM). The unexpected meeting took place during Jokowi’s visit to the Nurul Qodiri Islamic Boarding School in Central Lampung. One of Jokowi’s juniors, Utama Priyadi, admitted he did not expect to meet him again after many years. He said the last time he met Jokowi was during his first term as President of the Republic of Indonesia when he visited the UGM campus. “Alhamdulillah, I could meet a senior I haven’t seen for a long time. The last time I met him was during his first presidential term, when he visited the campus. And I am his junior; he is from the class of ’80, I am from the class of ’82,” said Utama at the Nurul Qodiri Islamic Boarding School on Sunday, 28 June 2026. Utama recalled that the atmosphere at the UGM Faculty of Forestry at that time meant students knew each other well because the number of students was not too large. “The Forestry campus didn’t have too many students, mostly men. We knew him very well. We also witnessed him preparing for graduation and so on,” he said. Not only that, Utama also recounted Jokowi’s fondness for hiking mountains during his student days. He admitted to having joined his senior on hikes several times. Jokowi became aware of the reunion moment when he learned that one of his juniors was present during his blusukan activity in Lampung. Briefly, Jokowi confirmed their senior-junior relationship from their time studying at the UGM Faculty of Forestry. “He is class of ’82, I am ’80,” said Jokowi. There, Jokowi conducted blusukan for three days. Before departing from Adi Soemarmo Airport in Solo, Jokowi was seen wearing a shirt and cap bearing the logo of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI). Jokowi said his activity schedule in Lampung had been arranged and would be filled with several agendas with volunteers and PSI.
