Junior Reveals Jokowi's Hiking Habit During UGM Studies
The habits of the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), regarding mountain climbing during his university years, have resurfaced following a meeting with one of his junior colleagues from the Faculty of Forestry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM).
This unexpected encounter occurred amidst Jokowi’s visit to the Nurul Qodiri Islamic Boarding School in Central Lampung. One of Jokowi’s juniors, Utama Priyaoadi, admitted he did not expect to meet him again after many years.
He stated that the last time he met Jokowi was during his first term as President of Indonesia during a visit to the UGM campus. “Alhamdulillah, I was able to meet a senior I hadn’t seen in a long time. The last time we met was during his first presidential term when he visited the campus. I am his junior; he was part of the class of ’80, and I was part of the class of ’82,” Utama said at Ponpes Nurul Qodiri on Sunday, 28 June 2026.
Utama recalled that the atmosphere at the UGM Faculty of Forestry at that time allowed students to know one another well because the student population was not very large. “The Forestry campus did not have too many students, mostly men. We knew him very well. We even witnessed him preparing for his graduation and so on,” he said.
Furthermore, Utama shared Jokowi’s fondness for mountain climbing during his student years, noting that he had joined his senior on several climbing expeditions.
Jokowi himself recognised the moment of reunion when he realised one of his juniors was present during his ‘blusukan’ (field visit) activities in Lampung. Briefly, Jokowi confirmed their senior-junior relationship from their time at the UGM Faculty of Forestry, stating, “He is class of ’82, I am ’80.”
Previously reported, the 7th President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, began a series of agendas to tour Indonesia on Friday, 26 June 2026. The first city on Jokowi’s itinerary was Lampung, where he was scheduled to conduct field visits over three days.
Before departing from Adi Soemarmo Airport in Solo, Jokowi was seen wearing a shirt and hat bearing the logo of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI). Jokowi mentioned that his schedule in Lampung had been arranged and would include several agendas alongside volunteers and PSI members.
