Junior high for Krakatau 'son'

Junior high for Krakatau 'son'

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: The provincial administration will open a small junior high school on Sebesi and Sebuku this year, two tiny islets that are part of the Anak Krakatau (Krakatau Son) group of islands in the Sunda Strait.

Head of Lampung Education Authorities Enggus Subarman said that initially the two schools will follow the pattern of an "open school system" in view of the shortage of space and seats, Antara reported.

The project was launched as part of the government's campaign to expand the compulsory education program from six to nine years, covering children between six and 15 years old.

"Many children in these two islands have not had the opportunity to go to junior high school," Enggus said.

The Lampung Selatan regency office, which oversees the islands, has agreed to allocate two hectares of land for each of the schools. (emb)
