June 20, Nationwide Completion of the People's Schools Project Across 29 Provinces

The Ministry of Public Works (PU) targets the completion of the Second Phase of the Sekolah Rakyat (SR) at 93 locations across 29 provinces by 20 June 2026. The target was discussed at a Coordinating Meeting on Accelerating the Sekolah Rakyat Phase II, held together with the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) and the Ministry of Social Affairs at the PU auditorium on Wednesday 20 May 2026.

Representing the Minister of Public Works, Kuswara, Acting Director General for Strategic Infrastructure at the Ministry of Public Works, said that SR is part of the state’s effort to widen access to education that is affordable, high quality and inclusive for those in need. “As mandated in Presidential Instruction No. 8 of 2025 on Optimising the Implementation of Poverty Alleviation and Extreme Poverty Eradication, the Ministry of Public Works is tasked with supporting the Sekolah Rakyat programme by providing strategic facilities and infrastructure for the poor and ultra-poor communities,” Kuswara said in the release on 20 May 2026.

According to PU data, the Phase II SR programme is spread over 93 locations in 29 provinces and 91 districts/municipalities. “The Ministry of Public Works is committed to ensuring the completion of Phase II at 93 locations by 20 June 2026. To accelerate delivery, the Minister has also conducted on-site supervision to ensure the acceleration of works proceeds in line with the target,” he added.

To back the acceleration, PU has formed a Task Force for the Acceleration of SR construction that involves various units within the ministry. In addition, 67,588 construction workers have been deployed, working in three shifts.

Deputy IV of the Presidential Secretariat (KSP) Fadjar Dwi Wishnuwardhani said the coordinating meeting was held to resolve a range of construction obstacles so that the completion target can be achieved on schedule. He added that acceleration must continue to pay heed to the quality of works and operational readiness: “We know that time is limited, so acceleration must be managed daily without compromising quality, safety, and readiness.”

“Implementing the Sekolah Rakyat programme is not easy; it is not merely about erecting physical buildings, but also about building the nation’s future. KSP believes that with strong consolidation, disciplined execution and firmness across all lines, the 20 June 2026 target is not impossible,” Wishnuwardhani said.

The coordinating meeting was also attended by Herman Koswara, Chair of the Joint Secretariat of Sekolah Rakyat, other officials from the Ministry of Social Affairs, and representatives of the SR Phase II construction service providers.
