Judicial Commission to probe Depok case

JAKARTA: The newly installed Judicial Commission said on Friday it would launch an inquiry into judges of the West Java High Court over the latter's recent controversial ruling on the Depok mayoral election dispute.

Commission chairman Irawadi Yunus said that the commission had received the copy of the high court's ruling annulling the results that gave victory of Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) candidate Nur Mahmudi Ismail in West Java's June Depok mayoral election, and instead declaring Golkar Party candidate Badrul Kamal to be the winner.

The ruling, which is final and binding, has sparked widespread protest among PKS supporters.

But Irawadi said that the commission had no authority to revoke the court's ruling as its mandate was purely to supervise the performance of judges in the country. -- JP
