Judicial Commission to Monitor Trial of Crew Member Facing Death Sentence in Riau Islands

The Judicial Commission (KY) has stated its readiness to monitor the trial of a crew member from the Riau Islands who is facing the death penalty for alleged involvement in smuggling two tons of crystal methamphetamine.

“KY RI is ready to implement the recommendation of Commission III of the DPR RI to monitor the examination process of these two cases,” said Deputy Chairman of KY, Desmihardi, in Jakarta, Thursday (26/2).

He said that KY will immediately deploy a monitoring team to carry out the monitoring. Monitoring the case in court is the task of KY. Moreover, the crew member case in the Riau Islands has received public attention, prompting Commission III of the DPR RI to take action.

“Even if there is no request for monitoring, KY RI can proactively monitor the examination of the case,” he added.

Commission III of the DPR RI held a meeting today with the family of Fandi Ramadan, a crew member of the Sea Dragon, who is facing the death penalty because the ship he worked on was carrying two tons of crystal methamphetamine.

Meanwhile, Member of Commission III of the DPR RI, Martin Tumbelaka, believes that the prosecutor has ignored several elements that could be considered before making the indictment.

According to him, Fandi is not the controller or initiator in the drug smuggling case on the ship. As a crew member, Fandi does not have the authority.
