Following the recent fatal shooting of the Supreme Court judge
responsible for criminal cases, Syafiuddin Kartasasmita, SH., it
suddenly makes you realize that up to now security for officials
holding such sensitive and important positions has been
neglected.

While we clamor for the upholding of justice and demand
cleaner courts and proceedings, it escapes our attention that the
issuance of fair verdict by a conscientious and courageous judge
entails risk to life and limb.

It would be an ironic tragedy if in this age of reform well-
heeled, trigger-happy avengers were able to halt the embryonic
attempts to bring about supremacy of the law.

The government should have addressed this long ago. But better
late than never. I would suggest that a policy be adopted
immediately to provide protection for judges
to ensure the possibility that just and fair verdicts may be
reached.
