Judges must report at cases

PALANGKARAYA, Central Kalimantan: Supreme Justice Bagir Manan ordered on Saturday all heads of district courts across the country to provide the Supreme Court with the details of all the cases they hear.

He said the cases could deal with corruption, theft, piracy, drug abuse and violations of environment and forestry laws.

"The reports should contain the articles, charges and outline of the cases," Bagir said in a speech read by his deputy, M. Taufik.

Bagir said the reports would help the public assess the success of the courts in enforcing the law, especially in fighting corruption, economic crimes and pollution.

"The reports will help us make the public understand that defendants are not always acquitted because of irregularities in the court, but sometimes the acquittals are related to the management of other institutions," he said. --Antara
