JAKARTA - The panel of judges in the trial of the alleged acid splashing against KontraS activist Andrie Yunus criticised the working methods of the defendants, who are part of intelligence but deemed far from professional.

The criticism was voiced by the Chief Judge, Colonel Chk Fredy Ferdian, during the proceedings at the Military Court II-08 Jakarta on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

During the witness examination agenda, Fredy expressed astonishment at the methods used by the four members of the TNI’s Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) who are the defendants in the case.

“I’m not an intelligence person, maybe my colleagues are the same. I see it as so amateurish, it makes me annoyed looking at it,” Fredy stated in the courtroom.

Fredy assessed that the actions allegedly carried out by the defendants do not reflect intelligence work standards.

“Your method is utterly poor, disorganised. Is this how BAIS operates?” Fredy asked the witnesses from TNI BAIS.

The four defendants in this case are known to be BAIS TNI personnel, namely Sergeant Two Edi Sudarko, First Lieutenant Budhi Hariyanto Widhi, Captain Nandala Dwi Prasetya, and Captain Sami Lakka.

“Make it look good. If there’s CCTV, just wear a jacket, wear a mask, wear a cover. Why in the middle of the road without face covering, without helmet. This becomes a laughing stock,” he continued.

In response to the statement, the Commander of the Headquarters Detachment (Dandenma) of TNI BAIS, Colonel Inf Heri Heryadi, who was present as a witness, explained that the defendants do not carry out operational intelligence functions in their daily duties.

“Yes, sir, personally, because our daily work in Denma indeed does not handle external matters, especially things like that. We all focus on services, perhaps including the defendants who in their daily work are indeed in services,” said Heri.

In the indictment, the incident was said to have been triggered by the defendants’ annoyance at Andrie Yunus’s actions when he interrupted at the Fairmont Jakarta Hotel on 16 March 2025.

“The defendants considered brother Andrie Yunus to have insulted the TNI institution and even trampled on the TNI institution,” stated Military Prosecutor Lieutenant Colonel Corps of TNI Law Muhammad Iswadi in a previous hearing.

The defendants now face layered charges, starting from Article 469 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code as the primary charge, Article 468 paragraph (1) as subsidiary, to Article 467 paragraphs (1) and (2) as further subsidiary in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of Law Number 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code.

The trial process is still ongoing to test the facts and the role of each defendant in the incident.
