Judge Summarises Nadiem Makarim Verdict Reading from 1,146 to 122 Pages
The panel of judges at the Corruption Court in Central Jakarta summarised the reading of the verdict document for defendant Nadiem Makarim during the trial on Tuesday (30/6/2026). Out of a total of 1,146 pages, the judges only read out the essential sections. Presiding Judge Purwanto Abdullah explained that this efficiency measure involved reading only 122 pages containing the legal considerations and the verdict. The decision was taken considering the health condition of the former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. Before the trial commenced, Nadiem had informed the panel that he had suffered two further infections. He even had to undergo hospital treatment ahead of today’s verdict hearing. Although it was not read in its entirety, Purwanto confirmed that the complete 1,146-page document remains accessible to all relevant parties, including the public prosecutor, legal counsel, and the defendant himself. ‘After this verdict reading, the public prosecutor, legal counsel, and the defendant can access it through the One-Stop Integrated Service after we verify and sign it,’ he added. Furthermore, the document will most likely be uploaded via the e-Berpadu system. Nadiem Anwar Makarim is implicated in an alleged corruption case concerning the education digitalisation programme. The case involves the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management within the Ministry of Education and Culture for the 2020–2022 period. According to the prosecutor’s indictment, Nadiem’s actions allegedly caused state financial losses amounting to Rp2.18 trillion. Previously, the public prosecutor had sought a heavy sentence for Nadiem, namely 18 years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rp1 billion, subsidiary to 190 days of confinement. In addition, Nadiem was ordered to pay restitution of Rp5.67 trillion, subsidiary to nine years’ imprisonment. Several other individuals have also been implicated in this case, including Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam, Mulyatsyah, and Sri Wahyuningsih. Meanwhile, another party, Jurist Tan, remains at large. Nadiem was charged with violating Article 2 paragraph (1) or Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Corruption, as amended by Law Number 20 of 2001, in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) 1st of the Criminal Code.
