Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Anwar Makarim has been sentenced to 10 years in prison in a case of alleged corruption involving the procurement of Chromebooks and Chrome Device Management (CDM). The judge ordered Nadiem to be returned to a state detention centre (Rutan).

“The court rules that the defendant shall remain detained,” said presiding judge Purwanto S Abdullah while reading out the verdict for Nadiem at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday (30/6/2026).

Nadiem had been under house arrest since 12 May 2026. The judge ruled that the sentence imposed on Nadiem would be fully reduced by the time he had already served in the detention centre and under house arrest.

“The period of arrest and detention already served by the defendant shall be deducted entirely from the sentence imposed, with the provision that the time spent in the state detention centre is counted in full, whereas the period of house arrest served since 12 May 2026 is counted as one-third in accordance with statutory provisions,” the judge stated.

In its considerations, the panel of judges stated that returning Nadiem to the detention centre to continue his detention was legally justified. “Considering that the defendant has been sentenced to a prison term longer than the detention period already served, while the reasons and conditions for detention as stipulated by law remain fulfilled, the Panel of Judges is of the opinion that the defendant’s detention is legally justified to be continued with a type commensurate with the prison sentence imposed, hence the defendant is ordered to be detained,” the judge said.

Nadiem Makarim was previously found guilty in the alleged corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebooks and CDM. The judge sentenced Nadiem to imprisonment. “The defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim has been legally and convincingly proven guilty of committing a criminal act of corruption carried out jointly as charged in the subsidiary indictment,” said presiding judge Purwanto S Abdullah while reading out the verdict at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court on Tuesday (30/6).

“Sentences the defendant Nadiem Anwar Makarim, therefore, to imprisonment for 10 years,” the judge added.

The judge stated that the primary charge from the prosecutor was not proven. The judge declared Nadiem guilty under the subsidiary charge, namely violating Article 604 in conjunction with Article 18 of the Corruption Eradication Law in conjunction with Article 20 letter c of Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code.

The judge also sentenced Nadiem to pay a fine of Rp 1 billion, with a subsidiary of 190 days of confinement, and restitution of Rp 809 billion. If Nadiem is unable to pay, his assets may be seized and auctioned. If the assets are insufficient, it will be replaced with 5 years of confinement.
