The panel of judges in the trial for the alleged corruption in the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) is considering changing the detention status of the defendant, former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim. The panel of judges will study the request from Nadiem’s legal team to alter his detention status.

“What the advocate or defendant raised earlier was a request for suspension or change, yes. The panel of judges has already discussed it and will study the request,” said Chief Judge Purwanto S Abdullah after the hearing on Monday (6/4/2026).

The judge then mentioned the conditions if the panel grants the request. One of them is not leaving the city.

“First, for the determination of the place, the place will be determined, yes, the defendant must meet the conditions, namely not leaving the place, for example, for house detention or city detention if it is changed, yes. Of course, for health interests, it is still allowed,” he said.

The judge also requested that Nadiem be fitted with an electronic monitoring device if the request to change detention status is granted. Nadiem is also ordered to surrender his passport.

“In addition, there is willingness to be fitted with a device, for example, an electronic monitoring device, yes. That willingness, and of course, mandatory reporting to the public prosecutor and surrendering the passport,” he said.

The judge also asked Nadiem not to communicate with witnesses and other defendants. He also asked Nadiem not to give any statements to the media outside the hearing.

“Also not to contact, meet, or communicate with witnesses or other defendants or those who could potentially become suspects, for example, yes. Also not to make statements, interviews, or any comments to the media, yes,” he said.

After the hearing, Nadiem stated his commitment to meeting all the given conditions. He hopes to recover from his illness.

“Yes, I am definitely committed to all the requests earlier; we will definitely agree,” said Nadiem.

“Insyaallah, hopefully it can be granted. So I can recover without disrupting the trial process, and I can have surgery without losing time in the trial. That’s the goal,” he added.
