Judge Enquires About Health: Nadiem Admits to Experiencing Bleeding
Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Nadiem Anwar Makarim revealed that he had experienced bleeding and was required to undergo treatment in hospital. Nadiem was temporarily released from detention and treated in hospital for four days.
Nadiem disclosed this during a hearing in the alleged corruption case involving the procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) at the Jakarta Anti-Corruption Court on Monday (23/2/2026). The matter arose when the panel of judges enquired about his condition before proceedings commenced.
“Are you in good health today, Defendant?” asked presiding judge Purwanto S Abdullah.
“I am well, Your Honour. Thank you. I am ready to proceed with the hearing,” Nadiem replied.
The judge then asked whether Nadiem had been granted any temporary release from detention during the legal process. Nadiem stated that he had experienced bleeding and was released for four days to receive hospital treatment.
“Over the past two weeks, has there been any temporary release from detention or anything of that nature?” the judge asked.
“There has, Your Honour. Four days to receive treatment as I experienced bleeding. But thankfully, it was successfully treated at the hospital, from Wednesday through to Sunday,” Nadiem replied.
Nadiem underwent hospital treatment from Wednesday (18/2) to Sunday (22/2). In this hearing, prosecutors presented ten witnesses.
“So you were admitted to hospital on Wednesday the 18th and discharged on the 22nd, a Sunday?” the judge asked.
“That is correct, Sir,” Nadiem replied.
In this case, Nadiem has been charged with corruption related to the procurement of Chromebook laptops during his tenure as Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology. The project is alleged to have caused state losses of Rp 2.1 trillion.
Nadiem had previously filed a legal objection. The judges rejected the objection and ordered the trial to proceed to the evidentiary stage.
