A United States judge has blocked a decision by the US government through the Pentagon, which had classified the artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic as a national security supply chain risk. This ruling represents a decisive victory for the makers of the Claude AI model in their dispute with the US military regarding restrictions on AI usage on the battlefield.

US Federal Court Judge Rita Lin, on Thursday (27/08/2026), assessed the Pentagon’s decision as illegal and groundless. Lin herself is a judge appointed by former US President Joe Biden.

“Blanket invocations in the name of national security are not a blank cheque to punish and retaliate against government critics,” Lin wrote in her ruling, as quoted by Reuters on Tuesday (01/09/2026).

The case began after US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk. This decision granted the government the authority to block Anthropic from various military contracts.

This controversial move was taken after Anthropic firmly refused to allow the US military to use the Claude AI model for domestic surveillance purposes or the development of autonomous weapons. Anthropic maintains that current AI technology is not yet sufficiently reliable to be used safely in autonomous weaponry systems, while domestic surveillance carries the potential to violate civil rights.

In response, Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the US government. The company argues that the Pentagon exceeded its authority and engaged in retaliation due to Anthropic’s critical stance on AI safety standards. The company also claims it was never given a fair opportunity to contest the unilateral designation.

On the other hand, the US Department of Justice argued that Anthropic’s refusal to meet the requirements for using Claude could create uncertainty for the Pentagon and risk disrupting military system operations. The government maintains that the designation was based on the company’s refusal to meet contract requirements, rather than their views on AI safety.

The designation of Anthropic marks a historical milestone as the first case where a US-based company has been openly branded a supply chain risk under government procurement rules, which are intended to protect military systems from foreign sabotage threats.

Anthropic has welcomed the court’s decision.

“We remain focused on working productively with the government to leverage AI for national security so that all Americans can benefit from this technology,” the company wrote in an official statement.

Nevertheless, this legal battle is not entirely over. Anthropic must still face a second lawsuit in Washington, D.C., regarding a separate supply chain risk designation that could potentially remove the company from the list of US civilian government contract partners.
