JPS: Jakarta's labour-intensive programme is the right policy
Jakarta Public Service (JPS) considers the labour-intensive programme initiated by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, which provides a salary or income equivalent to the Provincial Minimum Wage (UMP), to be the right policy amid the current economic conditions. “Amid rising fuel prices that could potentially impact the prices of goods and daily necessities, this programme can help people earn an income,” said Jakarta Public Service (JPS) Executive Director M Syaiful Jihad in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday. He assessed that the labour-intensive programme policy is a pro-people step that is appropriate amid economic conditions potentially affected by the increase in fuel prices (BBM). Syaiful explained that the rise in fuel prices could trigger increases in the prices of several staple foods and other consumer goods. Therefore, the presence of the labour-intensive programme is an important instrument to maintain people’s purchasing power, especially for vulnerable and low-income groups. “The labour-intensive programme initiated by the Governor of DKI Jakarta, Pramono Anung, is a timely policy that sides with the people,” he said. Syaiful explained that the policy not only provides temporary work opportunities but also acts as a social cushion capable of reducing the economic pressure felt by the community. “Prioritising residents registered in the DTKS shows the government’s alignment with those who need it most. Thus, the programme’s benefits can be felt more accurately on target,” he stated. He wants this policy to be accompanied by the placement of workers according to their respective domiciles. This step is considered able to reduce the transportation costs that beneficiaries must incur while helping to reduce traffic congestion in Jakarta. “Placing participants according to their domicile area is very important. Besides minimising transportation expenses, this policy also helps reduce excessive mobility and has the potential to suppress congestion,” he said. Syaiful also emphasised the importance of an open and transparent recruitment process so that the programme runs optimally and gains public trust. “Transparency in the recruitment process must be a primary concern. The public must have equal access to information and a fair opportunity to participate in this programme. Thus, the labour-intensive programme can run accountably and provide maximum benefits for Jakarta residents,” he said. He hopes the programme can continue to be expanded and become part of the local government’s strategy in maintaining the economic stability of the community, especially amidst the various economic challenges still faced today. “I hope this labour-intensive programme can also improve the skills of the beneficiaries. The Regional Job Training Centre (PPKD) must be able to take on a role,” he said.
