JPPI Records 233 Cases of Violence in Educational Environments
The Indonesian Education Monitoring Network (JPPI) assesses that the case of sexual harassment by several students from the Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia indicates that violence in educational institutions is increasingly concerning. JPPI records 233 cases of violence occurring in educational environments over the last three months.
National Coordinator of JPPI, Ubaid Matraji, opines that this figure shows that violence in educational environments is no longer sporadic incidents. “Rather, it is a systemic phenomenon that occurs repeatedly and is widespread,” Ubaid stated in a written release on Tuesday, 14 April 2026.
Ubaid explained that the 233 cases of violence in the first quarter of 2026 occurred in various locations, including 71% in schools, 11% in universities, 9% in pesantren, 6% in non-formal educational units, and 3% in madrasahs.
Regarding the types of violence, JPPI reports that sexual violence is the most common case at 46%, followed by physical violence at 34%, bullying cases at 19%, policies containing violence at 6%, and psychological violence at 2%.
Meanwhile, based on the identities of the perpetrators, 33% are educators or educational staff, 30% are students or pupils, 24% are adults, and the remaining 13% are varied. “This data shows a distressing fact because the largest perpetrators come from within the education system itself,” Ubaid stated.
Ubaid emphasised that the violence case at FH UI and this data indicate that Indonesia is currently facing an emergency of violence in the world of education. JPPI urges the government to immediately declare an emergency status for violence in education and make it a national priority.
JPPI also calls on the government to firmly punish perpetrators without compromise, whether from educators, fellow students, or outsiders. “The government should not just make regulations and then stay silent. Without serious steps, violence will continue to recur and damage the future of the young generation,” Ubaid stated.
Previously, allegations of sexual harassment in a conversation group of Faculty of Law students surfaced on social media. The harassment was carried out by 16 Faculty of Law UI students from the 2023 batch. Chair of the FH UI Student Executive Board, Anandaku Dimas Rumi Chattaristo, explained that initial information about this case emerged after the alleged perpetrators sent an apology request through their batch group.
From there, conversations with a sexual tone discussing other female students in their internal group were revealed. Those conversations then circulated on social media. This case is currently being investigated by the rectorate. “I am very disappointed with the sexual violence that occurred and will not tolerate actions that are not victim-oriented,” he said when contacted on Monday, 13 April 2026.
