City needs US$795m for flood projects

The government needs some Rp 1.7 trillion (US$795 million) to
get rid the capital city from flood, says an official of the
Directorate General of Irrigation.

Satrio Untung, head of the project for the dredging of
Ciliwung and Cisadane rivers, said here Thursday that the huge
budget is required to fiance land acquisition in the 18 hectare
areas, which are affected by flood throughout the year.

"The huge amount of money is needed due to the soaring prices
of land for land acquisition," Satrio told reporters during a
visit to four dams in the city.

For example, he explained, the government spent Rp 100 billion
($46million) for the acquisition of a six-kilometer area in North
Jakarta.(bsr)

Apartments for
Bendungan Hilir

The municipal administration is now constructing a low-cost
apartments for Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta, residents.

Central Jakarta mayor Abdul Kahfi said on Wednesday that the
administration the 296 unit apartment building in the 8,600-
square-meter plot in Bendungan Hilir, of which some 70 will be
used to house former area residents whose houses were razed by
fire several months ago.(09)

Coca-cola sponsors
circumcision

PT Coca Cola Indonesia, a subsidiary of the giant American
soft drink company, is sponsoring a program to circumcise 50
small boys from the poor families in West Jakarta.

The circumcision was held at the company's factory on Jl. Daan
Mogot, West Jakarta, Thursday morning.(09)

Austrian tried for
using stolen card

Klaus Mart, 25, an Austrian national, is on trial at the West
Jakarta district court for using a stolen credit card originally
issued by issued by PT Adipura Sumber Sedaya Finance.

Prosecutor Villa Darmawi told the court on Wednesday that
Klaus along with his friends, Bambang, Santo and Budi, used the
Silver Card belonging to Agustina Gunarsin at a department store
at Citra Land shopping center in Grogol, West Jakarta, on Dec.
31, 1993.

Klaus, according to the prosecutor, selected the items they
wanted to buy and forged the signature of the original owner,
while the three other accomplices collected the goods worth a
total of Rp 2.5 million.

The defendant and Budi were captured by security guards who
had been informed by the cashiers the credit card was dubious.
Their accomplices left as soon as they knew of the imminent
arrival of the security guards. (has)

Student killed
by brawlers

Ferry Maulana, 18, a senior highschool student, was stabbed to
death by two students a technical senior highschool in Cideng
Raya, Central Jakarta.

The victim was stabbed in the stomach by the two students
whose identities were withheld by police as he watched a brawl
between students from his school and another area school on
Tuesday evening. (has)

Jakarta to host
volleyball game

Jakarta will host "the First Jakarta Cup Sister Cities
Volleyball Tournament" to be from June 16 to 22, Robert P.
Silalahi, the head of the intercity and interprovincial
cooperation bureau, said yesterday.

Participants of the tournament are scheduled to come from
eight Jakarta's sister cities, including volley ball players from
Tokyo, Seoul, Berlin, Casablanca, Los Angeles, New South Wales,
Arkansas and Amsterdam.

According to Silalahi, the tournament is linked to the 467th
birthday of Jakarta and will be staged at Istora Senayan, the
national sport complex.

Participants will be divided into two pools determined by the
result of lots to be drawn in the third week of April. The
competition will apply the three winning set system. (06)

New film series
on Betawi people

Karnos Film, a local film producer, will make another 26
episodes of the popular television series Si Doel Anak Sekolahan
in response to the public's positive favor given to the previous
episodes.

"I am thankful to the public for their warm welcome to the
previous six episodes and for their help for the production of
the next episodes," Rano Karno, the producer and director of the
series, said on Thursday.

"I will guarantee these new series will not be boring," Rano
promised during a ceremony marking the beginning of renewed
production at a housing complex in South Jakarta.

Rano said the shows will be aired on private television
stations starting next September.

The production of the first phase, which will consist of 13
episodes, is expected to be completed next July, while the
second phase will be finished in December.

Rano Karno, 34, added that the extended series will still use
the concept of the initial series for which the Betawi (native
people of Jakarta) dialect and culture served as the main theme.

The first six shows of the series, which were aired on the
private TV station RCTI during the prime time, from 7:30 p.m. to
8:30 p.m. every Sunday in January and February, featured Rano
Karno, Benyamin Suaeb, Suti Karno, Aminah Cendrakasih, Mandra,
Cornelia Agatha and Adem.

The previous storyline featured the everyday life of a
university student named Doel, a native of Jakarta, portrayed by
Rano Karno.

Rano said that the new series, which will cost between Rp 40
million to Rp 50 million per episode, will present several guest
stars from the Lenong Betawi traditional comedy group. (05)
