Councilors support govt's policy

Two of the four factions at the City Council threw their weight behind the municipal administration's plan to be more selective in choosing candidates to fill the posts of top level executives at the city owned companies.

"We (the Golkar faction) support the plan. We felt for a long time that there was a need for city companies to be managed in a more professional manner," said Atje Mulyadi, chairman of the Golkar faction at the council.

The plan was also hailed by Yusuf Hamdani, chairman of the United Development Party (PPP) faction at the council. He said the municipal administration plan was a bold measure to augment the city's originally earned income.

On Wednesday, the Bisnis Indonesia economic daily, reported that the city administration planned to conduct a major review on the process of the appointment of top executives at the seven city owned companies. This was part of a major drive to enable them to compete with private firms.

This information was obtained through sources at the governor's office who asked to remain anonymous.

In the past, the recruitment process -- which is done by the governor's office -- was seen as being largely based on favoritism, and affiliation with the Armed Forces (ABRI).

The Armed Forces appoint their personnel to fill posts reserved for ABRI at state-owned firms under the so-called Kekaryaan program. (has) ;JP;JSK; ANPAj..u.. Jakarta--Focus--5th

Laborers face 5-year imprisonment

Prosecutor Haruddin demanded that the North Jakarta District Court sentence three laborers to five years each for killing their foreman.

Pos Kota, quoting prosecutor Haruddin, reported Wednesday that the three defendants, identified only DN alias Kamal, 21, JM, 24, and NR, 27, killed Anwariddi at a house on Jl. Pluit Putri, North Jakarta, at 3.55 p.m. on Aug. 7, 1993.

Prosecutor Haruddin said the defendants met Anwariddi in a temporary shed, built near a house they were renovating, to ask for advance wages. Reportedly, they wanted to go to their hometowns for a week and got angry when the victim refused to pay a week's advance.

Upon receiving unfavorable reply from Anwariddi, the defendants grabbed a crowbar lying near the victim and struck him with it several times.

The victim died on the way to hospital.

The trials were adjourned until Monday to allow the defendants, who are being tried separately, to read their defense statements. (09)

Best service for community urged

The city's animal husbandry offices are required to give their best service to the community in the run-up to Idul Adha Day on May 21, Oetoro, the head of the office said Wednesday.

Idul Adha Day is one of the Islamic holy days when Moslems buy and slaughter livestock, usually goats, as a sacrifice to God. They believe that God prevented Prophet Ibrahim from slaying his son Ismail by offering up a goat for slaughter instead.

Oetoro said the district heads are also required to improve inspections of livestock to be sacrificed and to gather accurate data on who owns the livestock, their prices, where they come from, where they are located and how many workers are needed to deal with them.

In a related development, Oetoro recommended that livestock suffering from stress be treated with anti-stress medicine distributed free of charge.

Oetoro reminded that slaughtering of livestock is exempted from all forms of taxation and that it is forbidden to trade the meat. (06)
